Stephen Henry Foster, 81, passed away peacefully at home on October 29, 2025, with his daughter and son-in-law by his side.
Born to Charles and Anna (Durham) Foster, Steve grew up with a strong sense of curiosity, kindness, and humor that stayed with him throughout his life. He was preceded in death by his brother Charles, his granddaughter Oggie Peace, and the love of his life, his wife Mary (DiMatties) Foster.
He leaves behind his daughter Bernadette, her husband Matthew, grandson Chad, and his son James and his wife Tracie - all of whom will forever carry his stories, laughter, and wisdom in their hearts.
Steve began his journey as a sailor in the U.S. Navy - a role he took on with pride, even if it meant eating five pounds of bananas to make minimum weight. His Navy years shaped his life in many ways and sparked his lifelong trade as an electrician, a craft he practiced with skill and dedication until his retirement.
More than anything, Steve was a devoted husband and father. His love for Mary was deep and enduring - she was his partner in every sense of the word, and their bond remained a guiding light for him long after her passing. Together they built a home filled with warmth, laughter, and love. Steve was proud of his children and cherished his role as "Papa" to his grandchildren. His family was truly the heart of his world.
Steve was endlessly curious and self-taught in countless hobbies and interests. He played the guitar, loved fly fishing and kayaking. Later in life he started painted with watercolors, and drew with colored pencils, creating beauty and joy right up until his final days. He loved a good conversation, had deep compassion for others, and sought to understand and love God more with each passing day.
A funeral service to celebrate Steve's life will be held at Haddonfield United Methodist Church 29 Warwick Rd, Haddonfield, NJ 08033, on November 12, 2025. The receiving line will begin at 7:00 p.m., with the service to follow at 7:30 p.m.
