Stephen Ray Hartgrove, passed away on January 28, 2026, in Glen Burnie, Maryland, at the age of 84. He was born on December 5, 1941, in New Castle, Indiana, and went on to lead a life marked by significant professional achievements and deep family bonds.
Stephen pursued his education diligently, graduating from Indiana University in 1964. Following his graduation, he embarked on a distinguished 32-year career with the National Security Agency, serving as the Deputy Chief of Industrial and Field Security. His commitment to his profession and the integrity with which he fulfilled his duties left an indelible mark on his colleagues and the field of security.
Beyond his professional life, Stephen had a rich array of interests that showcased his vibrant personality. He enjoyed traveling, and had a great appreciation for the Fire and EMS community, serving with the Laurel Rescue Squad as a volunteer. He loved Broadway musicals, NASCAR and Indy racing, and sitting in the sun.
Stephen is survived by his cherished family, including his children: John Hartgrove (Gloria), Stephanie Hancock (Joe), and Joe Hartgrove. He was a proud grandfather to Matthew Hartgrove (Rachel), Darren Hartgrove (Kelsey), Jennifer Hancock, and Mitch Hancock, and delighted in being a great-grandfather to Chase Hartgrove. Stephen also leaves behind his beloved sisters-in-law, brother-in-law, and many dear nieces and nephews, who will carry his memory forward.
He was preceded in death by his devoted wife, Barbara M. Hartgrove; his son, James E. Hartgrove; his brother, Jerry Hartgrove; and his parents, Ira and Doris Hartgrove.
In remembrance of Stephen Ray Hartgrove, a Memorial gathering will be held on Saturday, February 7, 2026, from 11:00 AM to 1:00 PM, followed by a Memorial Service at 1:00 PM at Singleton Funeral and Cremation Services, located in Glen Burnie, Maryland. Stephen's life was a testament to the values of dedication, love, and service. He will be deeply missed by all who knew him.
