Steve was a dear friend . . . We met at the Book of Kells Exhibit , Metropolitan Museum of Art in the 80's. Blessed to have known his joyous spirit, and to have his work in my home. Katy McHugh, Lambertville NJ

When I went back home to Digby for a visit in 2008, Stephen was living on the Neck. We visited him at his home a few times and he showed some of his paintings detailing his new obsession with the study of mushrooms and rocks. What stands out in my mind was his studio, so full of light and with paintings in various stages of completion, one of a woman he loved, a close friend who had passed. He told me some of his stories. As a writer I have never forgotten his generosity when recounting tales, some of them painful, from his personal journey through this life. We discussed two paintings of rocks near his house and he hung one that he hated because it was too dark and brooding but he felt it needed to be seen even if he didn't care for the result. Naturally, it was beautiful. However, his paintings of men engaged in physical labour on bridges, at sea etc were so alive you could feel the tensed muscles and virility of his subjects. Stephen was truly one of a kind and I'm so happy we met and spent time with him.

Steve graciously and patiently tried to teach me the art of Japanese sumi-e painting back in the 1980s. He was wise enough to use old newspaper instead of wasting rice paper however. Our sessions often dissolved into delightful laugh-fests! I also have lovely memories of delicious dinners and good conversation with Steve and Cornell and their friends. Steve's painting have pride of place in my home today. I'm attaching a photo of my favorite one. Steve was a wonderful, kind man and I feel lucky that he graced my life.

I got to know Stephen at Otterbien. My Mom is also there and I enjoy talking to other residents at dinner. Stephen had this glimmer in his eye and was always so thankful for any help you gave him. He was a sweet man and I´ll miss seeing him. So nice to know what a wonderful life he had. My condolences to everyone who knew him.
Sincerely,
