Stephen Mayger Obituary

Stephen John Mayger, 83, of Latrobe, passed away Friday, April 4, 2025, at UPMC Mercy Hospital, Pittsburgh. Born Jan. 2, 1942, in Latrobe, Steve was the eldest son of Stephen and Justine Mayger. Raised on his grandfather's farm, at a very young age he was taught the meaning of hard work and accepting responsibility, traits he carried throughout his life. Steve was drafted into the U.S. Army in Jan. 1964 and married his high school sweetheart five months later in June. He served during the Vietnam War as a mechanic and as a member of the Regimental Headquarters of the Seventh Cavalry Regiment Air War Casualty Retrieval Unit. While in the Army, Steve earned many medals and achieved the rank of SPC5 but refused the promotion and corresponding medals, saying that the men who never came home deserved them, not he. Steve's first radical throat cancer surgery was in Aug. 1990, and at the time he was given one year to live. God kept him with his family for 35 more years. His determination and strength helped him through many surgeries as he endured the very unpleasant changes that came along with them. A true family man, he was loved and respected by his family. He enjoyed working with his daughter Stephanie on many projects and was proud of his daughter Clarissa, a nurse, whose constant care and worry about his well-being was much appreciated. He also enjoyed camping, traveling, and just being together. He was so happy to enjoy his grandsons, and especially those special great-grandbabies. Ellie (six) and Stevie (four) always ran to Steve with greetings of 'Hi Pap' and 'Where's Pap' and the big hugs would begin. Steve worked at Latrobe Steel and went on to retire as a mechanic from the Unity Township Municipal Authority. He had been the owner and operator of Steve's Auto Body in Lawson Heights for 20 years. He was mechanically minded and was always using his knowledge to fix things. Steve especially loved working on his John Deere tractor. Steve leaves behind a very heartbroken family, including his wife of 60 years, Barbara; daughters, Clarissa Somers and Stephanie Mayger; former son-in-law, Kevin Somers; grandsons, Tyler Stephen Somers and his wife, Kelli, and Garrett Lee Somers; and his great-grandchildren, his greatest joys, Vincent, Ellie, Steven, and baby Nova. There are no words to express how much he was loved and will be missed. We know that Steve is with God, smiling and happy that he is now pain-free. There will be no public visitations or services. Private interment will be at Unity Cemetery. Arrangements are being handled by the LOPATICH-BRINKER FUNERAL HOME LLC, 601 Weldon St., Latrobe.
