Stephen McGarry Obituary

Obituary published on Legacy.com by Russell & Pica Funeral Home of the Bridgewater's on Mar. 9, 2026.
Stephen J. McGarry, CRNA, of West Bridgewater, Massachusetts, passed away peacefully surrounded by the love of his family on March 5, 2026. He was born on July 30, 1943, in Brockton, Massachusetts, the son of Stephen J. McGarry of Brockton and Lillian Feindel McGarry of Nova Scotia.

Steve shared a loving marriage with his wife, Mary Lou Ford McGarry of Bronx, New York. The couple were married on May 30, 1970, at Our Lady of Assumption Church in the Bronx and built a life centered on family, faith, and service.

He was the proud and devoted father of Marlene McGarry Najarian and her husband Daniel Najarian of Duxbury, Massachusetts; Thomas J. McGarry and his wife Christi Yap McGarry of Granite Bay, California; and Kevin R. McGarry and his wife Erin Powell McGarry of Milton, Massachusetts. He was a deeply loving grandfather to Annabelle, Rose, and Henry (Hank) Najarian; Fiona and Keira McGarry; and Michael, Ella, Patrick, and Charlotte McGarry. His grandchildren were truly his pride and joy, and he loved nothing more than celebrating their accomplishments and cheering them on at their games and events.

Steve is also survived by his siblings Kathleen McGarry LeDuc (wife of the late Richard LeDuc) and John McGarry (husband of the late Janet McKenna McGarry). He was predeceased by his brother Bruce Feindell and wife Hildred of Nova Scotia. He leaves behind many beloved nieces and nephews and cousins.

Steve graduated from Brockton High School and proudly served his country as a medic in the United States Air Force. He continued his education at the Bellevue and Mills School of Nursing in New York and the Carney Hospital School of Anesthesia in Boston, ultimately becoming a Certified Registered Nurse Anesthetist. Over the course of his career, he provided compassionate care to countless patients and especially veterans while working at Cardinal Cushing Hospital in Brockton, The West Roxbury Veterans Hospital, and Cataract and Laser Centers.

A man of strong faith and generous spirit, Steve served as a Eucharistic Minister at St. Ann's Church in West Bridgewater. He was deeply involved in his community, serving as a Boy Scout leader and coaching youth sports for his children. He was also an avid Boston sports fan and enjoyed many card games and laughs with family and friends.

For the past 15 years, Steve faced significant health challenges, but he never allowed them to keep him from the things he loved most-especially supporting his grandchildren. He made every effort to attend their games and events, often saying that the first goal, save, or hit was "for Poppy." Living through their experiences brought him great joy and pride.

Steve practiced his Catholic faith throughout his life and will be remembered for his empathy, kindness, and deep love for others. He was known for his warm spirit, his biggest smiles, and what many described as the best hugs.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in his memory to the Tunnel to Towers Foundation www.T2T.org/donate or the West Bridgewater Food Pantry www.wbfoodpantry.com.

His family will forever cherish his love, his faith, and the many memories he created with those fortunate enough to know him. Thankfulness and forgiveness are the language of love.

A funeral service will be scheduled at a later date.

Thoughts and prayers to the McGarry family from central Florida. There will never be better neighbors than the McGarry´s on Timothy Dr. As I and my brother have said, "we didn´t deserve them". God bless Steve McGarry or as we called him, Mr. Mac.

My sincerest condolences. I had the pleasure of knowing Steve as a superb , caring , compassionate nurse anesthetist at the VA during my very early career. Our careers remained intertwined for decades and evolved into a cherished friendship with Steve and Marylou.

I also became his cardiologist, it was my pleasure to provide care to him. In spite of his formidable health issues , he always had a smile and commitment to make the best of any challenges. Marylou´s dedication and expert care were remarkable and without which Steve could undoubtably not have travelled his journey .

I will miss our visits . his smile and his never relenting positive attitude.
