Just found this, a year too late. I went through Air Force basic training with Steve.

My family first met Steve and his family back in 1996 while serving at Kadena Air Base in Okinawa, Japan. Our families connected while our children (Nate, Adam, and Mya) played youth soccer. During that period we learned that they were from Maine like us and also into scuba diving. My son Adam and I along with Steve and his son Nate had numerous underwater adventures and shared wonderful times. I recall a late afternoon dive where the sun set on us and it got dark underwater, making it difficult to see and was also quite eerie. On that particular dive, Steve had brought his underwater movie camera and when he would turn it on the light he had on it came on it lit the dark underwater like a baseball park. I recall giving Steve 2-thumbs up and noted to him after the dive that when he had the light on my comfort level rose significantly. We had so many great dives together as our friendship developed. We often spoke about life back in Maine.
I also had the honor of flying with Steve in a little piper-cub airplane as he took me up along the coastline of Okinawa. We also recall Steve telling us that Kat made Whoopi-Pies during the Christmas holidays. Growing up in Maine we all loved and enjoyed Whoopi-Pies. Steve and Kat shared some of those delicious treats with us that Christmas.
We have stayed connected with Steve and his family through the years and always cherished the times we could meet up. When we traveled back to Maine we would make it a point to visit with him and the family. This past July my wife (Lou) and I had the wonderful opportunity to have dinner with Steve and the whole Montminy family. Sitting across from Steve over dinner we shared memories and laughed about all our past adventures and his current and future plans. He also expressed several times about how happy he was to have his grandsons close and how enjoyed spending quality time with them, Nate and Lere.
Our sincere condolences to Kat, Nate, Lere & the boys for their great loss. We pray for their strength and comfort as they reflect on Steve's amazing life.
