Stephen C. Moosekian was born on April 25, 1946 in Detroit, Michigan to Hamp "Hank/Blackie" and Lucille Moosekian. The only boy wedged between 4 sisters; Mary, Kathie, Carole, and Becky, his stubbornness was fostered by being surrounded by women his entire life. He ran wild through Southwest Detroit and eventually was drafted to the U.S. Army. He narrowly missed being sent to Vietnam as he worked for the railroad at the time and eventually was stationed in Virginia when this bad-boy from the wrong side of the tracks married his sweetheart Gerrie Gorham. Steve and Gerrie began to start their family, first with their daughter Amy, followed by their son eight years later, Timothy. He went on to work as a machinist for Norfolk & Western Railroad for over 30 years and was passionate about trains and machinery until his last days.
Steve was an avid Detroit Lions and Tigers fan. He could often be found complaining about bad calls and unfortunate outcomes with bright expletives while watching games with his family. He enjoyed fishing, working on cars, and tinkering with his son-in-law Mark around the house, with the boats, and in the yard. He would commonly be found jamming to Pink Floyd while enjoying his favorite herb. He loved classic rock and Prince and was set to visit Paisley Park as a "bucket-list" trip with Amy, but sadly passed away just a few days shy of their trip. He shared a love of Armenian grape leaves with his son Tim and granddaughter Mika and would pester Amy alongside her to make them more than the measly "once a year" joint birthday dinners the two of them shared.
Stephen was a perfectly imperfect man, as we oftentimes are. He was an unabashedly brash dirty old man and our real life "Grumpy Cat". Many people knew he was a jerk, but that is also why we all loved him so much. Our family's optimism could be met with his hilarious pessimism and it made for many comical years alongside him. He was sarcastic as all hell, funny without trying to be, and unapologetically genuine in his candor. He had a lust for redheads (he once staked claim to his granddaughter's ginger-haired girlfriend Kelly 45 years his junior) and practical jokes. We will continue to hear his wicked, mischievous giggle in our minds when something just doesn't go our way alongside his gravelly smart-ass voice saying, "Told you so".
Steve had a tough shell, but was mush deep-down especially in his later years with his grandchildren. Although we all know that Mika was his favorite, (Sorry Ty, Zach, and Brady), it turns out Mika ended up not being "jack" when it came to his great-grandbabies Charlie and Delaney. His love for those two girls is really what made his world go 'round and his eyes lit up whenever he would get to visit them. He was known to send them $20 each every holiday for their piggy banks, even the insignificant ones.
Steve bravely fought a long and strenuous battle with cancer, alongside his companion Margaret "Mags". (She hates that nickname, but she owns it now) Mags was a lovely counterpart to our old man and we will be forever grateful for all the love, joy, happiness, support, and help she not only gave to him, but our family throughout their years together. Unfortunately, Steve succumbed to his battle in the early hours of Friday, August 19, 2022 at the age of 76. While still he yearned for more time here with us and his grandbabies, he went out on his own terms surrounded by his family in his daughter's loving home. He will be deeply missed by the family and friends he chose to generally terrorize on a daily basis. So shine on you crazy diamond! We'll see you on the dark side of the moon.
Stephen is survived by his loving children Amy (Mark) Byars, Tim (Leticia) Moosekian, Jamison Blakemore, Jesse (Kerry) Blakemore, and Summer Blakemore. He was the dearest pain-in-the-ass to his companion Margaret "Mags" Wallace. Grumpy "Gramps" to Mika (James) Wright, Tyler Byars, Zachary Moosekian, and Brady Moosekian (his birthday buddy) and the sweetest man ever (where did that come from?) to his most precious girls Charlie Maynard and Delaney Wright. Best dog dad to Sadie girl. Dearest brother of Kathie (the late Bill) Wilhelm and cantankerous uncle to many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents Hamp and Lucille Moosekian, as well as his sisters; Mary Henderson, Carole (the late Bob) Timmons, and Becky (Dan) Nightwine, his former wife Jennifer Moosekian and his step-daughter Kelley Blakemore.
Visitation for Stephen will take place on Wednesday, August 24, 2022 from 2:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. at the Allen Park Chapel of the Martenson Family of Funeral Homes located at 10915 Allen Road, 48101.
