Stephen Springer Obituary

Stephen Barry Springer
November 16, 1947 - January 4, 2026
Stephen Barry Springer, known to family and friends as Steve, passed away after a life rich in service, learning, and love. He is survived by his devoted wife of 51 years, Janice Elaine Moore Springer; his sons, Steve (and wife Terri) and Scott (and wife Annette); and his grandchildren, Kalyn, Sheldon, Braeden, James, and Jacob. He is survived by a loving circle of relatives and a community touched by his dedication to education, counseling, and public service.
Born in Carrollton, Texas, on November 16, 1947, Stephen was the son of James Thomas Springer and Sybale Pauline Springer. From a young age, he demonstrated a deep commitment to learning. He pursued his education with vigor, earning a Bachelor of Science from St. Mary's University, a Master of Psychology from Our Lady of the Lake University, and a Doctor of Education degree from Texas A&M University. He also earned a Life Certificate of Professional Counseling and a City Public Manager certification from the State of Texas, testaments to his passion for guiding others toward better outcomes.
Stephen married the love of his life, Janice Elaine Moore, on April 13, 1974, a union that began with a memorable first date when he asked, "Do you feel like an ice cream?" While dating, Janice attended Abilene Christian University, and Steve made countless trips from San Antonio to visit, underscoring his steadfast devotion.
In 1985, Steve and Janice relocated the family to Schertz, Texas, where both of his sons would later complete high school. Steve's professional journey began in education, where he taught elementary school and gradually advanced to roles as counselor and school administrator. His career then blossomed in higher education; he spent nearly four decades at Texas State University in San Marcos as a tenured professor and administrator, shaping minds and careers while also offering pro bono counseling through church partnerships to support marriage and family therapy.
In addition to his academic and counseling work, Steve served his community on the school board, where he was elected as a trustee and eventually served as president of the SCUCISD school board for several years. His leadership extended into the Texas State Guard, where he rose through the ranks to retire in 2013 as a Colonel. Throughout his life, he remained deeply involved with his church communities-serving as a deacon or elder at various local Churches of Christ, including Northside, Northern Oaks, and most recently in Schertz. Janice, with her characteristic warmth and commitment, spent many years educating and caring for children at church alongside him.
Steve's legacy is one of tireless service, a lifelong commitment to education and counseling, and a steadfast devotion to his family and faith. He enriched the lives of students, colleagues, church members, and a broad circle of friends with his integrity, compassion, and intellect.
The family would like to extend heartfelt thanks to the amazing and compassionate care staff at The Brooks of Cibolo, as well as Freedom Hospice who continuously went above and beyond the call of duty.
Visitation will be held at Schertz Funeral Home on Friday, January 9, 2026 from 5-8pm.
Memorial service and celebration of life will be held at the Schertz Church of Christ on January 24, 2026 at 2pm. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that gifts be made to the Burd-Cook-Springer Endowed Scholarship at Texas State University.

It was interesting to have known Steve. I worked with him for two years at St. Mary's University Library while we were students. Then many years later I met him again and worked with him to help educate my junior officers when I was the Adjutant of the State Guard Medical Brigade. It was an honor and a privilege to have known him.

Through Steve´s work at Texas State, so many of us benefited from his strong work ethic, deep care for students, and quiet wisdom. He made our work-and our community-better through his kindness. My deepest condolences go to his family and all who are grieving this loss.

Dr. Springer, "Steve," was a valued colleague, mentor, and friend at Texas State University. I looked forward to the days he was on campus, often with Janice as a joyful bonus. Their devotion to each other and their faith,
and his service to students, staff, and faculty, provided examples for work and life. You will be missed, Steve. Thank you for your support, especially during my early years, and of students over the decades and in the future via the Burd-Cook-Springer Endowed Scholarship. Prayers to Janice and the Springer family. May you be lifted up in faith and with good memories. Peace, Dr. Cathy Cherrstrom
