Stephen Douglass Stine, of Etna Green, departed this world peacefully on Monday, January 6, 2025, at Parkview Regional Medical Center in Fort Wayne at the age of 81. He was born on April 28, 1943, in Warsaw, Indiana, the son of Otho and Kathryn (Bates) Stine. Stephen lived a life marked by dedication, hard work, and a deep love for his family and the natural world around him.
A proud graduate of Etna Green High School in 1961, Stephen pursued further education at DeVry Technical Institute in Chicago, Illinois, where he acquired the skills to work on the Nimbus weather satellite. He dedicated 40 years to Slater Steel in Fort Wayne, working tirelessly before retiring to continue his journey with Horizon Transport in Wakarusa, where he spent an additional 20 years. Stephen’s work ethic was a hallmark of his character, and he was known as a hard worker who devoted himself to his profession and family.
Beyond his impressive career, Stephen served his country honorably in the Marine Corps from 1961 to 1963. The values instilled during his military service only strengthened his commitment to his community and those he loved.
On August 17, 1966, Stephen married Mary Ann Dawalt. The two shared their lives together, creating lasting memories and raising their two children, Scott and Katie.
Stephen found joy in the simple pleasures of life, particularly in spending time outdoors. He enjoyed working diligently on his property, always having a project at hand. Whether tilling the soil on his orange Kubota tractor or tending to his garden, he found peace in nurturing the land. His love for animals shone brightly, as he delighted in caring for his pets, feeding the birds, and watching the koi fish swim gracefully in his pond.
He leaves behind his wife, Mary Ann Stine, of Etna Green, their son, Scott Stine, of Warsaw, and their daughter, Kathryn "Katie" Stine, of Etna Green. Stephen is also survived by his sister, Carol (Don) Keller, of Bradenton, Florida, along with numerous nieces, nephews, great and great-great nieces and nephews who will all cherish his memory. He is preceded in passing by his parents and brother, Timothy.
