Stephen Michael Swartz, 40, passed away January 12, 2026 while on a work assignment in Dodge City, Kansas. Born on July 10, 1985, at Clark Air Base in The Philippines, Stephen’s life began with adventure—sharing his first breath with his twin brother, Eric Jason. The two were inseparable, their bond forged in the unique world of a military family, moving from place to place, remaining close, even as adults. Stephen’s formative years unfolded along the sandy shores of Delaware, where he developed a love for the ocean and a competitive edge that would define his youth. At Polytech High School in Woodside, Delaware, Stephen excelled in basketball, baseball, track, and cross country, graduating in 2003.
Stephen enlisted in the Air Force, where he specialized in IT and served his country with pride for three years. His journey then led him to marry his high school sweetheart Candace Branch, and together they moved to O’Fallon, Ill., in 2011. As a father, Stephen was the heart of his family—devoted, playful, and always present for Amilian and Stephen.
Professionally, Stephen found fulfillment as a drilling laborer with GeoStabilization International. His colleagues respected him not just for his work ethic, but for his kindness and the camaraderie he brought to every job site.
Stephen’s passions colored his world: he was a movie buff, an avid collector of film memorabilia and a loyal fan of the Ohio State University Buckeyes and Cincinnati Reds. He attended church at Christ the King Apostolic Church in O’Fallon, where his faith was a guiding light. Known for his sharp sense of style, he expressed his personality through a distinctive and confident approach to fashion—a reflection of his playful spirit and zest for life. Through every chapter, Stephen’s story was one of connection, adventure, and joy. His legacy lives on in the memories of those who loved him, the laughter he shared, and the example he set as a son, brother, husband, father, and friend.
Survivors include his parents Jeff and Angela (nee Ausby) Swartz, of O’Fallon, Ill., twin brother Eric Jason Swartz, of O’Fallon, Ill., his former wife Candace Branch; beloved children Amilian and Stephen Branch; nephew Eric J. Swartz, Jr., his four-legged friends Winter and Maximus; and a loving extended family of aunts, uncles, and cousins.
Visitation will be held from 5 – 8 pm, Tuesday, January 20, 2026 at Wolfersberger Funeral Home, 102 W. Washington St., O’Fallon, Ill.
