Stephen Whalen
1947-2025
Stephen 'Buddy' Whalen passed away peacefully surrounded by his loving family on Friday, March 21 at the age of 77.
Born in Darby, PA on August 30, 1947, Buddy spent his life in Delaware County and is well-known in the community for his humor, generosity and loyal friendship. He was raised in Darby and settled in Colwyn, PA with his high school sweetheart, Thelma 'Ginger' Whalen (nee Kitselmann), who he married on June 6, 1970. The two eventually moved to Glenolden, PA and remained loving partners until his passing.
Buddy served in the US Army and was deployed in the Vietnam War. After serving proudly, he remained active with the American Legion, where he once served as the commander for Robert Jackson Post #999, and was an active member in the Cpl. Wm. Greifzu VFW #598 in Darby, PA until his death.
He enjoyed spending time with his grandson and his two cats and sharing stories of his childhood. He had an uncanny memory for names and details of the people he proudly called friends. He shot a mean game of pool and was quick with a clever response in any situation. He loved his family and friends deeply.
He is survived by his living family: wife, Ginger, his grandson, Logan Fritchey, his sisters, Debbie Griffith-McGee (Tom), Diane Griffith-Smith (Tim) and a host of nieces, nephews and cousins.
He was preceded in death by his only daughter, Stephanie Whalen; his father, Louis Whalen; mother, Peg Griffith (Crane) and stepfather, Harold 'Griff' Griffith and his brother, Joe Whalen.
Relatives and friends are invited to attend Buddy's memorial visitation on Monday, March 31, 2025 after 10 AM at the Cavanagh Family Funeral Home, 301 Chester Pike, Norwood, followed by a service at 12 noon. Interment will be private.
The family requests in lieu of flowers, the family would greatly appreciate donations be made to The Wounded Warrior Project.
