Stephen T Whitehurst Jr of Brewster, age 76, passed away peacefully at Cape Cod Hospital on Thurs Feb 20. Steve was born in the Bronx, NY and raised in Levittown PA. He was the son of Stephen T Whitehurst and Mary Dantona Whitehurst, both originally from Scranton PA. Steve attended Neshaminy HS in Levittown and went on to earn his Bachelor of Arts degree from CW Post College of Long Island NY.
Steve is survived by his wife of 41 yrs, Nancy Matzke Whitehurst, his son Brett Whitehurst and partner Allyson Ayala and granddaughter Arya of S Yarmouth, his son Stephen and wife Kimberly Whitehurst and granddaughters Dylan and McKenna of Port St Lucie Fl and daughter Rameka McGuire and husband Brian and granddaughters Emma and Paige of Long Valley NJ. He is also survived by his first wife and friend, Justine Melone of Toms River NJ and by a brother William Whitehurst and wife Lori of Levittown PA. He was preceded in death by his parents and a brother Basil Whitehurst.
Steve played any sport he could growing up and was a defensive lineman at Neshaminy HS, a PA powerhouse football school that was undefeated the 4 years he was there. He went on to play college football at CW Post College of Long Island NY where he earned his bachelor's degree. Shortly after college Steve began his real estate career by running leads from the NY and NJ area to the Pocono Mts of PA. He achieved immediate success in sales and knew this was his calling. His 50+ yrs selling resort and residential real estate took him to Hilton Head SC and then to Brewster MA. In 1984 while employed by Dunes Marketing Group, Steve was positioned as the Director of Sales at Ocean Edge Resort and The Villages of Ocean Edge in partnership with the Corcoran Mullins Jennison Co. The success of Ocean Edge in the 80's was legendary! Steve went on to Direct residential sales projects in Big Canoe GA, Hilton Head Island, Lake of the Ozarks MO and Nantucket before settling back in Brewster and becoming a partner and broker/owner at Realty Executives. Everyone he met had the potential to be a prospect or a friend and many of his dearest friends over the years were the result of a real estate transaction.
He loved watching sports - any sport, not just football. He was the biggest fan of the WV Mountaineers and the NY Giants and after that whoever was winning. He also loved the Cape Cod Baseball League and the Brewster Whitecaps hosting players and participating with the Board and management of the team. He was the President of the organization when they won their first championship in 2000 and wore his ring with great pride! He loved a good game, a good team and a good winner and respected losing with grace if you played hard and did your best. He was the kind of person you wanted on your team. In business, he was a master at overcoming objections and was honest and fair in all his dealings. He was always willing to share his knowledge and expertise and help others however he could (unless it was a technology thing). He could light up a room with his "one liners" and could find humor and a good laugh in just about any situation. He never mastered the game of golf to his own satisfaction, but he did shoot an 82 against Bobby Riggs in the early 1980's but. That's another story.
He was a kind and gentle father; a good friend and listener, a better talker, slow to anger and tenacious in any endeavor. He was inspired by many and confident in his faith in God and that his life was well lived. He will be deeply, deeply missed.
"Every day you should laugh, think and be moved to tears and never, never give up!" Jimmy Valvano
