Sterling Joseph Gaines entered eternal rest on Sunday, November 16, 2025, at the age of 77. He was a native of New Orleans, LA and a resident of Marrero, LA. Sterling was a graduate of George W. Carver High School. “Joe”, as he was affectionately known by family and friends was a retired employee with Louisiana DOTD-CCC. Devoted husband of 55 years to LaVerne Tillman Gaines. Beloved father of Dana (Darius, Sr.) Brown, and Raquel (Darrick) Hamilton. Son of the late Harry J. Gaines, Sr. and Annie Mae Gaines. Bonus son of Harriet Gaines. Grandfather of Diamond, Darius, Jr., and Demiere Brown, Brian M. Adams, Jr., and Shante’ M. Adams. Great grandfather of Demi Love Brown and Zayden M. Adams. Brother of Denise Bellock, Contrella Norman, Sylvia Gaines, Melinda Hill, Tammy (Merwin) LeBlanc, Harry (Eunice) Gaines, Jr., Ricky (Adaline) Patterson, Guy (Marie) Patterson, Sr., Henry Roussell, III, Roderick (Chiquita) Roussell, and the late Stanley J. Gaines, Larry Gaines, Phyllis Gaines Campbell and Barbara (Andrew) Cavalier. Grandson of the late Jules Brown, Beatrice Brown Gardner, Cornelius Gaines, and Griffin Edwards. Son in law of the late Joseph Tillman, Sr., and Ida Ruth Tillman. Devoted Uncle to Christie Harris and Antoinette Jones. Brother-in-law of Terronce Tillman, the late Joseph Tillman, Jr., Cheryl Ann (Morris) LeBlanc, Nikita Delaney, and Effie Gaines. Godfather of Quana White. Close friend of Douglas White, Sr., the late Ernest Tross, Sr. and Peter Willis Sr., also survived by a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, other relatives and friends. Residents of the Haydel Manor Subdivison, Relatives and friends of the family, also pastors, officers, and members of White Chapel Baptist , New Hope Baptist Church, and all neighboring churches are invited to attend the Celebration of Life at New Hope Baptist Church 434 7th St. Gretna, LA on Wednesday, November 26, 2025, at 11:00a.m. Pastor John Mason officiating - Pastor Warren E. Johnson Host Pastor. Visitation will begin at 9:00am until service time at the above-named church. Interment: New Hope Cemetery-Gretna, LA.
