Steven A. “Steve” Lane, age 69, of Mondovi, passed away unexpectedly at his home of natural causes on Wednesday, October 2, 2024.
He was born on July 13, 1955 in Durand, the third of five children born to the late, Ervin and Phyllis (Bergner) Lane.
Steve attended Durand Schools, graduating from Durand High School with the class of 1973.
Following graduation, Steve worked for Bauer Built and McMahon Motors before he began a career that spanned 30 years with Bauer Gas of Durand as a propane driver, retiring in 2021. Steve also worked weekends hauling milk for Neitzel Trucking of Alma.
In 1997, Steve and his good friend Cindy Black, began to spend time together sharing their thoughts of both the past and the future. This casual friendship would grow over time from friendship to love. Even though they never married, Steve would always consider Cindy to be his wife and would affectionately call her “Chickie”.
Steve enjoyed playing on both dart leagues and pool leagues in the Durand area.
Steve will be remembered for his larger than life personality, sense of humor and knack to make people smile, his love to meet new people and ability to strike up a conversation with most anyone.
Steve will be sadly missed by his longtime love, Cindy “Chickie” Black of Mondovi; children, Becky (Ryan) Weiss of Eau Claire, Jeremy Black of Eau Claire and Nicole (Ben) Black of Mondovi; 5 grandchildren, Axel and Annie Watts, Aiden Black; Aleya and Yaretzi Rodriguez; siblings, Priscilla “Pixie” (Chuck) Wolf of Elmwood, Brad (Tracy) Lane of Hastings, MN, Ron (Fiancee, Margie) Lane of Plum City and Jody (Trudi) Lane of Durand; also by many nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.
Besides his parents, Steve was preceded in death by his sister in law, Theresa and Rhonda, the mother to his daughter, Becky.
A private inurnment will be held at Forest Hill Cemetery in Durand.
A celebration of Steve's life will be at Riverview Community Center - 606 W Madison Street in Durand, WI on Sunday November 3 at 2:00 PM - 6:00 PM.
