Steve McElwaney Obituary

Obituary published on Legacy.com by Hardesty Funeral Home - Gambrills on Sep. 22, 2025.
Hillry Steven McElwaney (Steve), 76, of Gambrills, Maryland, passed away peacefully at home with his family on September 21, 2025.

Born on August 4, 1949, in Atlanta, Georgia, Steve proudly served his country in the U.S. Navy from 1970 to 1974 as a Data Processing Technician at CINCLANTFLT Headquarters in Norfolk, VA. Following his service, he earned both a Bachelor of Science in Business Administration and Computer Science and a Master of General Administration in Business Administration from the University of Maryland Global Campus.

Steve built a distinguished career spanning more than 40 years in program and technical management. He began with Honeywell Information Systems (later HFSI) as a Technical Program Manager for 19 years, then continued his leadership at Federal Data Corporation, which later became part of Northrop Grumman. He retired in 2014 after serving as a Program Manager with Northrop Grumman Information Systems, leaving behind a legacy of dedication, integrity, and mentorship.

Beyond his professional accomplishments, Steve embraced life with curiosity and passion. He had a love for many hobbies, most notably photography, riding his Harley, golfing, and playing poker with his buddies. These pursuits brought him joy, adventure, and lasting connections with others.

Above all, Steve was devoted to his family. He shared his life with his beloved wife, Janet Ruth (Falk) McElwaney, and was a loving father to Sean Thomas McElwaney and his wife, Rachel. He was especially proud to be "Grandpa" to Mikayla and Logan, who brought him immeasurable joy. He is also survived by his brother, Ray McElwaney, and Ray's wife, Viviane.

Steve will be remembered for his wisdom, quiet strength, and unwavering love for those around him. His memory will live on in the lives he touched through family, friendship, and service.

A memorial service will be held on Sunday, September 27, 2025, from 2–4 p.m. at Hardesty Funeral Home, 851 Annapolis Rd, Gambrills, MD 21054.
