Steve Petrakis Obituary

Obituary published on Legacy.com by Vander Plaat Memorial Home on Feb. 11, 2024.
Steve, of Paramus, New Jersey, passed away peacefully at home on February 7, 2024, following a valiant three-year battle with lung cancer. He was 96 years young.
He is survived by his devoted wife, Mary, of 64 years; his three loving daughters, Helen, Vicky, and Christina; his three adoring grandchildren, Ava, Steven, and Michael; his sister, Eriketi; his godchildren, Charles, and George; and countless other family members and friends.
In 1954, Steve arrived at Ellis Island from Crete, Greece, with just $20 in his pocket and a determination to make a good life for himself in America. Along his journey, he learned English, worked tirelessly to achieve the American dream, fell in love; married, raised a family, and proudly earned his US citizenship.
Steve got his start by washing dishes in a New York City restaurant; worked endless hours as a delicatessen clerk; and then forged a brotherly partnership with his lifelong friend, George Verganelakis. They achieved much success with a grocer spot in Washington Heights, NY, which led to continued success with a popular deli / catering shop they built in Fort Lee, NJ.
Steve was very passionate about life, cooking, and people. He greeted everyone with respect, a smile, and his coined phrase, "Hello my friend!" We can all use a friend like Steve in our lives, salt of the earth, a pillar of strength, and a compassionate human being.
In lieu of flowers, donations in Steve's memory may be made to St. Athanasios Greek Orthodox Church 51 Paramus Road, Paramus, NJ 07652, or Valley Hospice c/o The Valley Hospital Foundation, 223 North Van Dien Avenue, Ridgewood, NJ 07450.
Family will receive friends on Saturday, February 17, 2024 from 11:00 am - 12:00 pm at St. Athanasios Greek Orthodox Church, 51 Paramus Road, Paramus, NJ, followed by a 12:00 pm Funeral Mass.
Interment to follow at George Washington Memorial Park, Paramus, NJ.
