Steven Brown Obituary

Visit the Newcomer Funeral Home - West Metro Chapel website to view the full obituary.

Steven C. Brown, 70, of Lakewood, passed away peacefully at home on January 14, 2026, after a courageous battle with cancer.

Born August 21, 1955, in Wichita Falls to Robert Brown (deceased) and Harriet Brown, Steven grew up in Cary and Schaumburg, Illinois, and graduated from Cary-Grove High School. He moved to Denver in 1981 and earned a Bachelor of Arts in Technical Broadcasting Communications from Metropolitan State College in 1990.

Steven spent more than 30 years in the sports and entertainment industry as a Broadcast Television Technician, though he proudly called himself a “Sports Cameraman.” His work brought him deep fulfillment, lifelong friendships within his “crew family,” and was a cherished mentor to others.

A dedicated martial artist, Steven trained in Aikido for nearly two decades under Kashiwaya Sensei, earning his black belt and later teaching at Colorado Ki Aikido. The discipline shaped how he approached life and relationships. After his dojo closed, he devoted himself to roasting coffee as a hobby, carefully sourcing and preparing organic beans while dreaming of one day opening a coffee shop.

Steven loved traveling, camping, hiking, concerts, good food, and time spent cooking and gardening with his life partner, Kathy. He delighted in reading and sharing books with his grandson, Brenden. Music was a lifelong passion, and in his self-designed music room he spent hours exploring and enjoying everything from reggae and rock to jazz and classical. A fitness enthusiast, he also enjoyed CrossFit. He was a connoisseur of craft beer and coffee, always appreciating the artistry behind what he loved.

Above all, Steven’s greatest joy was his family. He cherished his life partner, Kathy, and his children, Dylan and Bekah. Steven adored his grandchildren, Brenden and Addy. When he spoke of them, his blue eyes would brighten unmistakably, reflecting the deep love he carried for them every day.

He is survived by his mother, Harriet Brown; his loving life partner of 12 years, Kathy McKenna; his devoted children, Dylan Brown and Bekah Addison-Brown; his grandchildren, Brenden and Addy; his sisters, Carol (Jeff) Hjort and Susan Hugeback (Tom Hoover); his brother, Mark (Jan, deceased) Brown.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Colon Cancer Coalition. A fund is being created in Steven’s name. Please visit Newcomer/Denver.com for updates, to share condolences, or to leave a special message.
