Steven Everette Chapman

Steven Everette Chapman was born on September 21, 1951 in Bryan, Texas and died September 12, 2023 in Bryan due to a car accident.  While these facts are significant, it was the time in between that is extraordinary.

Steve was born to Carlton Chapman ‘51 and Betty Jo (Rushing) Chapman while their father attended Texas A&M.  At the age of 2, after the death of Betty Jo, Carlton married Lurlyne (Pettit) Chapman.  The family grew with the addition of sisters Carla (Chapman) Cox and Myrna (Chapman) Reed.

Life for the Chapman family involved many Texas moves due to his father’s job in banking. After residing in Stanton, Big Spring, Wolfforth, and Bowie the family landed in Nocona, Texas in 1967.  While at Nocona High School, Steve was involved in FFA, football, track, and student council.  He was voted “friendliest” by his senior class.  He made lifelong friends who were so important to him and he was so proud to be from Nocona.

Steve attended Texas A&M and received a Bachelor of Science in Agricultural Economics in 1974 and Masters in Agriculture in 1976.  While at A&M he was in the Corps of Cadets and was Commander of Squadron Six and Platoon Leader of 1st Platoon of the elite Ross Volunteers.  Steve rose to these highest leadership levels living by and demonstrating the Corps values, “Aggies do not lie, cheat or steal nor tolerate those that do.” Steve was commissioned as a 2nd Lieutenant in the United States Air Force (USAF).  He rose to the rank of Captain in the USAF-Reserve. While in ROTC Summer Camp, Steve wrote home to his mother, “Mom, don’t worry about me, we are preparing to do great things for our country”.

Steve began a long career in banking, development and real estate.  In 1975, he went to work for The Mercantile National Bank-later M Bank and rose to the level of Vice-President.  For the next thirty years, Steve worked in Abilene and Dallas in banking, lending and consulting. He, with others formed Consolidated Bancshares.  As President and Owner, he formed Tandem Resources Group consulting to enhance what we know today as Standards in Banking.  He was President and Chief Lending Officer for the Dallas Region of First American Bank and served as President of the Dallas-Ft Worth Region for Citibank. After “retirement” in 2006, he remained active consulting in real estate and development deals in multi-states, buying and remodeling houses, and conducting a real estate broker business in the Dallas Ft Worth area.     

Steve’s sudden departure has left a void in all those who knew and loved him.  Those left, cherish his memory, Christopher Steven Chapman, Casey Jordan Chapman, Lexi Miller, her husband Blane and their daughter Collins, his mother, Lurlyne and sister Myrna.

He is predeceased by his dad, Carlton, and sister, Carla.

Steve leaves behind his beloved fiancée, Cynthia Pruett.

Steve will live forever in the arms of Christ and would be blessed to know all his friends and family will join him in Eternity sometime.

Arrangements are under the direction of Hillier Funeral Home, Bryan Texas.   A memorial service for Steve will be held at the All Faiths Chapel on the campus of Texas A&M University on Saturday, September 30, 2023 at 10:00 in the morning.  All are welcome to a reception to follow at 11764 Walnut Road, College Station, Texas 77845.
