After a courageous 18-month battle with cancer, Steven Wayne Colley of
Edmond, OK, passed from this life on September 19, 2023 in his home with his wife and children at his side.
Steve was born on October 31st, 1949, in Oklahoma City to Wayne "Doc" and Marguerite "Maggie" Colley who preceded him in death.
He was a proud 1968 graduate of Northwest Classen High School and attended Central State University, as well as serving six years with the US Army Reserve. A defining characteristic was his incredible work ethic. He was never without a job, beginning with a bicycle newspaper route at age 12. He also had jobs at McDonalds, Mobil Gas Station, and Kimray Inc. Steve then was introduced to the electrical industry where he worked in the warehouse of Emsco Electric Supply, eventually being promoted to inside sales. From there he moved on to Smith Lighting Sales working 12 years as a Sales Rep. This is where he would gain valuable experience which lead him to his 26-year career as a Senior Field Sales rep with Hubbell Incorporated Wiring Device Division. He was highly respected for his honesty and integrity with customers and peers alike.
Steve met Judi Donceel, the love of his life, while both were attending Northwest Classen. They married in 1969 and were blessed to have shared 56 years together. This November would have been their 54th wedding anniversary. In addition to Judi, Steve is survived by his daughter Carey Colley Buterakos (Jeff) and son Bryan (Katie); two sisters Karen Hoffman (Ray) and Suzi Clowers (Dennis); brothers Jeff (Mary) and Tom (Patti); and brother-in-law David Donceel (Lora); grandchildren Ethan and Kylie Hill and Brady, Lucy and Emma Colley, and many wonderful nieces and nephews.
Steve was an avid OU football fan and became just as big a fan of the girls' softball team, as well as a life-long NY Yankees fan. He was a "car guy", loving to tinker on his own cars growing up and fulfilled his dream of having a classic 1968 Mustang to enjoy in his retirement. He took great pride in his lawn and never thought of that as "work". He loved fixing and building things, teaching himself late in life his woodworking skills. He derived the most joy from spending time with his five grandchildren working on projects with Ethan, baking cookies with Kylie, watching Brady play basketball, and taking Lucy and Emma on walks in the forest and to Braum's. He was a true gentleman and will be greatly missed by all who knew and loved him.
We wish to acknowledge the kind and caring doctors and staff at OU Stephenson Cancer Center (urology clinic and Phase I clinic), who tried so hard to give Steve more time with us, as well as the caring nurses from Traditions Hospice who working diligently to make his final days comfortable. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to
St. Jude Children's Research Hospital. A link for making a donation may be found below, under "Memorial Contributions".
