Steven Odis Costner, a devoted family man and esteemed member of his community, peacefully slipped into eternity on August 4, 2025, at Atrium Health Main in Charlotte, North Carolina, with his lovely wife by his side. Born on September 8, 1955, in Cleveland County, North Carolina, Steven's life was a tapestry woven with service, love, and commitment to those he cherished.
Throughout his professional career, Steven consistently demonstrated an unwavering commitment to public service. At the tender age of 19, he began his career with the City of Shelby and continued to serve with distinction until his retirement at 49 from the Natural Gas Department. His commitment to safety and community welfare extended beyond his regular duties; for a remarkable 25 years, he proudly served as a volunteer firefighter for the Number 7 Fire Department, where his courage and selflessness earned him the deep respect of his peers and neighbors.
Steven was not just defined by his career; he was a man of profound affection, especially for his family. His beloved wife, Carolyn Smith Costner, remained a steadfast partner by his side through life's many joys and challenges. Together, they cultivated a warm and loving household, intertwined with the playful energy of their fur-babies, Katie and Maggie, who held a special place in Steven's heart, as did the many furry companions that came before them.
A member of Poplar Springs Baptist Church, Steven drew strength and solace from his faith, which guided him in both his personal and communal relationships. He was a beacon of kindness, warmth, and reliability, leaving an indelible impact on all who were fortunate enough to know him.
Steven is survived by his loving wife, Carolyn, his daughter Sarah Costner and his step-son, Nathan Nejberger of Shelby. His spirit will also be carried on through his brother, Wesley Carl Costner of Boiling Springs, NC, and his sister, Barbara Brown of Lincolnton. He was predeceased by his parents, Odis Carl Costner and Billie Ann Moore Costner, who surely welcomed him into eternity with open arms.
The visitation to celebrate Steven's remarkable life will take place on Thursday, August 7, 2025, at Cleveland Funeral Services & Crematory, located at 2518 W Dixon Blvd, Shelby, NC. Friends and family are invited to gather from 7:00 PM to 8:30 PM, where they can share memories and stories that highlight the joy and love Steven brought into their lives. Instead of flowers, the family asked that you make a memorial donation of your choice in Steven's name.
As we remember Steven Odis Costner, we honor not only the legacy of a devoted husband, father, and friend but also a gentle soul whose love will endure in the hearts of his family and community for years to come.
