Steven Lane Fleury, 76, of Westport, died on Monday, December 30, 2024 at the UVM Medical Center, Burlington, with his loving family by his side.
He was born in Elizabethtown on April 12, 1948, the son of Roy and Gaynelle (Minnix) Fleury.
Steve served in the Air Force from 1968 until his honorable discharge in 1970 as munitions specialist. He later retired from AT&T.
Steve lived a life that embraced his family, his love of nature and speaking his mind. He will be remembered as an avid hunter, fisherman, and as the "fun guy" for his love and knowledge of mushrooming, traveling as far as Tennessee in search for the perfect morel.
Steve loved to travel, especially to Puerto Rico with his beloved mother, to Tennessee to spend time with his daughters on Beale Street (where he said he met BB King), salmon fishing in Pulaski, NY and Graceland with his wife.
Never a loss for words he had many "Poppy Pep Talks" and never met someone he couldn't have a four hour conversation with. Steve told treasured stories of horse racing with his father, as well as shenanigans with his brothers.
He would build the most detailed doll house to teaching you to hook a worm; Steve always enjoyed sharing his knowledge with those he cared about. Always telling everyone to "make the most of the time you have and to have no regrets."
Steve was seldom seen without a cup of coffee in his hand and his companion and co-pilot, Sassy, whom misses him dearly, by his side.
Steve managed to make many, many friends throughout his life and journeys, but two held and will forever hold a special place with him, Barry Lawrence and Marshall Crowningshield.
Steve found strength in his faith and his church family and always quoted, "I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me" (Philippians 4:13). Steve remained strong in the last few months and continued to be the opinionated, determined man we all knew. We will forever cherish our memories and stories of him.
Left to cherish the memory of Steven are his wife, Diane LaMountain of Westport; daughter, Katie Fleury and fiancé, David Francis of TN; step-daughter, Joelle Nesbitt of Westport; sister, Shannan Fleury of Plattsburgh; grandchildren, Posie Beatrice Lane Steinmetz of TN, Allanah Nesbitt and partner, Trevor Ratliff of Elizabethtown, Edward Nesbitt V and partner, Madison Vassarr of Westport, Tyler McNealy of TN, Dilon Yount of MS, and Amanda Yount of TN; step-grandchildren, Christopher Yount of TN and Kateland Yount of TN; great-grandchildren, Maverick Ratliff of Elizabethtown, as well as several great-grandchildren in TN; sister-in-law, Rachel Fleury; and godsons, Curtis and Ryan Mead of Westport.
In addition to his parents he was predeceased by step-father, Sam Gutierrez; daughter, Angela (Fleury) Yount; and brothers, Michael and Wayne Fleury.
Services will be held in the spring on a date and time to be announced.
