Steven R. Gary, age 77 of Mendon, MI, passed away on May, 21, 2025 at Edgewood Health and Rehab in Three Rivers, MI. Steve was born in Three Rivers, MI on October 20, 1946 the son of Russell and Anna (Brown) Gary. He attended Vicksburg High School, graduating in 1964. After high school Steve followed a proud family tradition of military service and joined the United States Marine Corps, serving his country during the Vietnam War. "Once a Marine, always a Marine" was a motto that he took to heart. As a member of the St. Joseph County Area Marine Corps League, Steve contributed much to the local community, from fundraising for Toys for Tots and contributing to local food banks to participating in honor guards for local veteran's funeral services. Steve never met a stranger, striking up conversations with anyone he encountered. He also enjoyed traveling with his family throughout the US, as well as Germany and Mexico. He owned a Plymouth Prowler and loved taking road trips with other owners, but was happy to let his grandkids drive it to prom. Above all else, Steve loved his family and cherished his loving grandchildren. Steve is survived by his loving spouse of 24 years, Helga Cook; two children; Sonja (Doyle) Hunter and Nathan (Jennifer) Gary; four grandchildren; Amelia, Briana, Bryan and Aiden; two step children; Todd (Tracie) Cook and Lisa (James) Batten; the Batten families; the Cook families; his sister; Gloria Gary-Smith; and many more extended families, friends, and fellow veterans. He was preceded in passing by his parents; and his sister; Penny Stafford. In keeping with Steve's wishes, cremation is being conducted. A graveside service with military honors will be held on Saturday, July 12, 2025 at Vicksburg Cemetery at 10 am. It is suggested that memorials made in Steve's name be directed to your local Veterans Affairs office or your local VFW/Marine Corp League group.
