Rev. Steven L. Goughnour

Reverend Steven L. Goughnour passed away, February 13, 2025, from Hannibal Regional Hospital with a long battle of various illness. He was born on October 15, 1945, to Guy and Ruth (Johnson) Goughnour. He was preceded in death by his parents Guy and Ruth Goughnour and brother David Goughnour.
Steven L. Goughnour was born and grew up around his family business of the Goughnour Monument Company that was located in Corydon, IA. He was a 1964 graduate from the high school in Corydon, IA. The past year he helped his classmates celebrate his 60th class reunion during the Old Settlers Celebration.
Steve married Sharon Dietderich on Thanksgiving Day, November 26, 1965, in Clarksburg, WV. Steve and Sharon moved to Joplin, MO where Steve attended and graduated from Ozark Bible College, later named Ozark Christian College. Steve began preaching in a country church in Waco, MO before he even finished his degree. This was just two weeks after his daughter Shelly Lynn was born on July 1, 1967. Steve later graduated from Bible College in May of 1969. The year right before his son Steven L. Goughnour II was born on December 31, 1968.
After graduating from Bible College, Steve began preaching in various Christian Church Disciples of Christ throughout MO, TX and OK. He served in several churches over his 57 years of preaching. He served in churches in Waco, MO; Filley, MO; Princeton, MO; Mercer, MO; Higginsville, MO; Commerce, TX; Hugo,OK; and Monroe City, MO where he "retired" from the ministry on September 27, 2015.
However, Steve liked to stay busy, and he had other things he enjoyed doing in his spare time. He called in his "relaxation." He served as a Deputy Sherrif and was in law enforcement for over 50 years in MO and TX. He was a 32nd degree Mason and a proud 50-year member of the Masonic Lodge; a 50-yearmember of the Order of Eastern Star, Lexington Chapter #248, Lexington, MO. and served as a supporting Mason to the Order of Rainbow for Girls. He was a member of the Monroe Lodge #64, Monroe City; Hella Shrine Club, Garland, TX, and a member and chaplain of the NEMO Shrine Club and a member and chaplain of the O.C. Wilson Scottish Rite Club, both of Hannibal, MO.
For over 20 years, Steve worked for Garner Funeral Home in Monroe City and the Garner Family became his second family, spending many holidays and special occasions with them at their home.
Towards the end of his ministry, he went back to preaching at a small church, Olivet Christian Church, Center, MO, where he finished his calling.
Steve leaves behind family and many friends. He is survived by his wife Debbie Goughnour, Monroe City, who he married on May 23, 2010; ex-wife and mother of his children, Sharon Goughnour of Springfield, IL; his son, Steven Goughnour II, known as Skip (Jess) of Quincy, IL; daughter, Shelly L. Shaw (Kevin) of Springfield, IL; step-daughter Meghan Gulledge (Alvin) of Monroe City, MO; sister, Barbara Williams (Robert) of Melbourne, FL; sister-in-law, Marilyn Goughnour of Corydon, IA; two nieces Gabriella Eaton (Rick) and Anne Alberhasky (Mike) two great nieces, Auden and Olivia of Des Moines, IA; sister-in-law,Karen Donovan (Dale) of Mexico, MO; two nephews Sean Donovan and Alfonso Diaz of Chicago, IL; six grandchildren Ausitn, Katie, Collin and Beau Goughnour of Quincy, IL; Makayla Johnson of Bowling Green, MO; Andrew McClusky of Monroe City, MO and three great-grandchildren, Adalyn Johnson of Bowling Green, MO and Nash and Navy Goughnour of Quincy, IL. He was really looking forward to meeting his newest grandchild in April.
Steve always said that if he was unable to preach and serve the Lord, his work on Earth would be finished. Though he will be missed, we know that he is at peace with the Lord, and we will one day see him again.
The visitation will be Thursday, February 20, 2025, 4 P.M. -7 P.M. and the funeral will be held on Friday, February 21, 2025 at 10 A.M. at Gerner Funeral Home in Monroe City, MO. Memorial will go to Shriners Children's Hospital in St. Louis, MO and The American Heart Association.
