Steven Kent Hewlett, affectionately known as Steve by his friends and family, passed away peacefully on March 26, 2025, at Franciscan Health of Michigan City, Indiana,
Born on December 14, 1964 to the loving Willie Sanders and Joyce "Jean" Hewlett, Steve's warmth, energy, and vibrant spirit were evident from his earliest days.
Steve was a proud graduate of Rogers High School's class of 1984, where he formed many lifelong friendships and memories. His thirst for knowledge and love for his community led him to further his education at Purdue University Northwest. With a strong work ethic that was instilled in him from a young age, Steve worked at Hardee's and Domino's Pizza in his younger years. His commitment to his hometown was evident through his later work in maintenance at the City Hall of Michigan City and as a laborer at Palatek, Inc.
Family was the cornerstone of Steve's life. Beloved son to Joyce Hewlett. He was the father to Branden and Amber Hewlett. His role as a brother to Geoffery (married to Ruta) and Duane (married to Janelle) Hewlett was filled with camaraderie, love, and mutual respect. Steve's legacy extends through his many grandchildren, seven nephews, two nieces, aunt Bertha Hewlett-Gammage, uncles, Leroy Hewlett and Larry Hewlett, four close relatives, Charles Hewlett, Darin Hewlett, Kensley Hewlett and Antwan Hewlett-Adams and a multitude of relatives who will forever cherish his memory.
Steve's social circle was wide and diverse, a reflection of his open heart and genuine interest in others. His lifelong buddies, Titus Eckwood, Scottie Garrett, Clifton "Kip" Buchanan, and Ross Alsobrooks, shared countless good times and supported each other through thick and thin. The laughter and joy of their gatherings will echo as a reminder of Steve's infectious personality.
An avid sports enthusiast, Steve's passion for the Chicago Cubs and Chicago Bulls was matched only by his own athletic prowess on the basketball court and as a great skater. His competitive spirit was balanced by a love for music, which he shared with the community as an award-winning disc jockey. Steve's musical talents brought people together, creating moments of joy and celebration that will live on in the hearts of all who danced to his beats.
Steve's interests extended beyond the roar of the crowd and the rhythm of music. He was known for taking long, reflective walks throughout Michigan City, a practice that allowed him to connect with his roots and appreciate the beauty of his surroundings. The simple pleasure of being with his family and socializing with friends was the essence of Steve's contentment. He had an innate ability to make every person he met feel special, and his presence was a source of comfort and joy.
Steve's journey on this earth was filled with love, and laughter. His departure leaves a void that cannot be filled, but the memories he created will be a guiding light for his family and friends.
