Steven Huynh, born on March 10, 1956, in Long Thanh, Vietnam, passed away on February 21, 2025 at the age of 68, after a courageous battle with cancer. Steven fought extremely hard to stay with the people he loved, but his family is at peace knowing he no longer has to fight. He was surrounded by his loving family as he transitioned peacefully.
Steven's journey began in Vietnam, and in 1981, he left his homeland with his sister Hoa, his niece Van, and his nephews Long and Lan in search of a better future. In 1982, while at a refugee camp in Indonesia, Steven met the love of his life, Kathy. They married and began building a life together in San Rafael, California, where they resided for the rest of his life. Together, they welcomed their first daughter, Kim, in 1984, their son Tony in 1985, and later their daughter Daphne in 1989.
In 1986, Steven established his landscaping and gardening business, a passion he passed down to his son Tony, who began working with him at just 11 years old and continues the business today. Steven also pursued other entrepreneurial endeavors, including opening Kim Loc Video in 1990, a Vietnamese video rental store that expanded into a popular billiard and coffee shop. Known in the community as "Anh Loi," he dedicated much of the 1990s to creating a sense of togetherness for the local Vietnamese community.
Steven had a deep connection to his homeland, returning to Vietnam over 60 times throughout his life. When his mother became ill, he dropped everything to be by her side, embodying the selflessness and devotion he carried throughout his life. Even after his cancer diagnosis, Steven embraced life with the same passion. He made one final trip to Vietnam with most of his family while he was still healthy enough, creating lasting memories by driving his grandchildren around on his motorcycle-experiences they will cherish for the rest of their lives.
Steven had a love for gambling and winning, frequently traveling to Reno or Las Vegas to test his luck. Whether it was playing cards, slots, or any game of chance, he always enjoyed the thrill of the experience.
Toward the end of his life, Steven reflected on his accomplishments with pride and peace. Despite a mischievous youth, he turned his life around and built a legacy of love, family, and success. He never imagined that as a young boy in Vietnam, he would one day own multiple businesses, provide homes for his family in Marin, and create a life filled with stability and love.
Steven enjoyed many simple pleasures in life, including Vietnamese coffee, iced tea, and his favorite meal, com tam. He had a passion for travel, but no place called to him more than Vietnam, his homeland. He especially loved the beaches of Ha Long Bay, though his heart always gravitated back to the bustling city of Saigon, where he loved riding motorcycles with his grandchildren and wife.
Steven is survived by his loving wife, Kathy, his daughters Kim and Daphne, his son Tony, and his cherished grandchildren Jess (15), Jaden (9), Adeline (5), Xander (4), and Weston (7 months). He was eagerly awaiting the arrival of a new granddaughter, due in May 2025.
The family welcomes family, friends, and guests to attend the funeral viewing and ceremony on March 7 at 10:30am. After the viewing and ceremony, everyone is welcome to join the family and transportation to the burial site at Mount Olivet Cemetery in San Rafael, California at 2:00pm.
Steven Huynh was loved deeply by his family, friends, and community. His generosity, kindness, and warmth touched the lives of many, and he will be dearly missed. May he rest in peace.
