SANBORNVILLE, NH - Steven Alan Johns, 53, of Portland, passed away on Thursday, March 23, 2023. He was born on March 27th, 1969 in
Portland, ME., the third son of John and Theresa Johns.
Steven, also known as Stevie, Snoop, Coach Steve, Pops, and D Bear, grew up in Portland and attended Deering High School where he enjoyed sports and was a part of many bands, most notably The Hurricanes. After graduating from Deering High School in 1987, Steve attended the University of Maine at Orono where he received his degree in business. He later attended the University of Southern Maine for his MBA. In 1992 Steve met his wife, Rachel (Bucknell) at the Old Port Tavern where his band was playing. Steve got her phone number on a napkin at the next gig at the Fifties Pub and four years later, they were married. Together they raised three loving children and a very loyal dog, and shared nearly 27 years of marriage, through which they were the best of friends.
Throughout his kids' childhoods, he helped coach their little league, softball, baseball teams and attended nearly every single game, meet, concert, play, and award ceremony that they had. He did all of this in addition to being a rock star in the office and on the stage. The Hurricanes, who played their first gig in 1991, played numerous private parties annually, rocked down the house at Thatchers and Funky Bow regularly, and grew a massive following of loyal supporters, dubbed "The HurriFans". The band retired, and un-retired, more than a few times over the last couple years. He wouldn't let a few gray hairs stop him from guitar soloing all throughout the audience.
He was notorious for solving any and every problem his kids could come up with, excitedly showing off his new technology devices any time they came home from school, and making everyone laugh with his penny-pinching ways. Despite constantly reminding them to turn down the thermostat and not leave lights on when unnecessary, Steve loved his family more than anything, even his beloved Dallas Cowboys. He dedicated his fatherhood to ensuring that his kids experienced many adventures as a family, whether it be riding the scariest roller coasters at Disney World, squishing into a mini-van to drive twelve hours to Gettysburg to endure hours of historical reenactments, or strolling the beaches of Saint Petersburg at sunset and sunrise. He loved walks with his wife and dog, hikes around Maine and New Hampshire, and warm Florida weather. At family gatherings, he, like his brothers, was a comedian and epitomized everything a father, husband, brother, and son should be.
He is survived by his beloved wife Rachel; kids Sabrina (23), Sebastian (22) and Angelica (20), and their dog Roxy; mother Theresa Johns of Portland; brothers David Johns of Westbrook, Patrick Johns and wife Heidi of Portland, Michael Johns and wife Kelly of Gorham; and countless friends, HurriFans, coworkers, and extended family members. He joins his father, John Johns, in heaven, where they are without a doubt cracking cheesy jokes and walking the warmest of beaches together.
