Steven Samuel Kitchel, 80, Logansport, Indiana, passed away peacefully in his sleep early Monday morning, August 12, 2024.
Born July 3, 1944, in Logansport, he was the son of the late Samuel Meredith and Betty Mae (Null) Kitchel.
On June 30, 1963, in Chalmers, he was married to Betty Lou (Hines) Kitchel, who survives.
A 1962 graduate of Logansport High School, Steve majored in English at Purdue University before deciding on following in his father's footsteps. Steve retired after 40 years as a cement mason with the Local union in Lafayette -working most of his career in the Kokomo area.
Growing up in a loving Christian home, Steve's Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ, was his source of strength. He found an extended family in the Bridge of Life Church in Greentown which meant so much to him.
Harness racing was his passion - a sport he excelled in for over 40 years.
He is survived by his wife, of 61 years, Betty Kitchel, and their three children. Bridget (Scott) Green, Brenda (Kevin) Loveless, and Jeff (Lori) Kitchel; grandchildren: Kelsey (Logan) Knox, Cameron (Nicole) Green, Kendall (Erika) Green, Stevie (Courtney) Loveless, Amanda (Tyler Abbs) Loveless, Lacey (Schuyler) Laffoon, and Luke (Makenzie) Kitchel; and great-grandchildren: Emery, Adley and Tucker Knox, Genevieve, Abigail, Olson, Gus and Harris Green; and Kennedy and Savannah Laffoon; Also surviving are two sisters, Penny (Bob) Bannon, and Nancy Spagnoli; two brothers, Randy (Julie) Kitchel, and Michael (Audrey) Kitchel, three sisters-in-law, Conna Kitchel, Sara Kitchel, and Barb (Ted) Dieterle; one brother-in-law, Bob (Connie) Hines and many, many nieces and nephews.
In addition to his beloved parents, he was preceded in death by two brothers, Larry Kitchel, and Jay Kitchel; and one sister, Bonnie Miller.
A funeral service celebrating Steve's life will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, August 17 in Fisher Funeral Chapel with John McCarthy officiating.
Visitation will be held one hour prior to the service.
Burial will follow in the Ever-Rest Memorial Park.
Memorial contributions may be made to the Bridge of Life Church. Envelopes will be available at the funeral home.
