Steven, age 77, sadly left us early morning August 2nd this year, due to pancreatic cancer. Steve was a brilliant, creative, humorous, and lovable rascal who was still in good spirits through the end.
He was born and grew up in New York City, where he developed a love of science and a reluctance to play the piano (his mother was a piano teacher.) He attended the University of Chicago, where he explored science, medicine, and politics. He cultivated lasting friendships and an enduring reputation as a prankster, starting the infamous SVNAG ( student violence non action group.) Steve eventually settled in the Willamette Valley in the mid 70's. He was a phlebotomist with White Bird Clinic for many years and then moved into computer programming. Most anything he tackled, he mastered, from computers, to watercolor, to gardening.
Steve married Tamaris Leek, who passed two years ago. They enjoyed many years together with long conversations, heated debates, and lots of laughter.
He leaves behind his two stepdaughters Rebecca Boetzel (Alex Boetzel) and Molly Surgalski (Patrick Surgalski), 5 grandchildren, his sister Joy Gila Lindsey, his niece and nephew, and many friends.
A special thank you to all his caregivers.

Steve and I shared a dorm room our first year at the University of Chicago. He was one of the funniest and most creative persons I've ever met. Since I still live in the Chicago area, I occasionally visit the U of C campus, and when I do I invariably think fondly of Steve. He made the world a better place.
