Steven Lynn Matheson, age 74, passed away on the evening of December 27, 2023, with his adoring family by his side at home. Steve's devoted wife was, and always has been, there while Steve and she have fought Steve's health issues with relentless hope for the last two years.
Steve was born in Bristol, Virginia, Dec. 1, 1949, moving to Durham in 1966 where he graduated from Jordan High School and then attended Sandhills Community College.
Steve was predeceased by his parents, Jennie and Glen Matheson, his daughter, Stephanie Matheson Swearingen, and his in-laws, Ralph and Margie Muckenfuss Faulkner.
Steve is survived by his high school sweetheart wife, Kathy Rae Faulkner Matheson. Steve met the love of his life, Kathy, while he was a rock star in a band, "Sleepless Knights" and Kathy was instantly smitten. They married 12/20/70 and remained devoted and loving companions for the next 53 years.
Also surviving Steve are his son Steven Matheson II (Gina), and his daughter, Abigail Matheson Merritt (David). In addition, Steve leaves his beloved grandchildren of Durham: Starlyn Swearingen, Kacie Matheson, Eli Matheson, William Merritt, Wyatt Merritt and, also, Stormey Swearingen of Colorado Springs. His sister-in-law, Gail Faulkner Hudson, who is Kathy's sister, and nieces,
Dr. Cressent Hudson Pressly and Katie Hudson Collini, are close family members.
Steve was, indeed, a successful entrepreneur owning and operating many high-end women's clothing stores in his lifetime. Some of his ventures were
Mini-Dee Fashions at South Square and Riverview Shopping Centers, and Birthday Suits and Carolina Girls at North Myrtle Beach. After retirement, Steve worked as a photographer for area realtors.
Anyone who knew Steve, knew his family was his passion. They were his heart and soul. Every conversation, every plan, every thought, exuded his love for each of them.
Whether attending his grandchildren's athletic events, musical performances, college celebrations, or birthday parties, Steve's smile would shine with pride. He was delighted to be their "Poppi."
The only distant rival for Steve's attention was Duke athletics. He rarely missed a game!
We will have a celebration of Steve's life at Clements Funeral Home in the Gathering Room on Thursday, 1/4/24, any time from 11:00am-1:00pm. All are invited to share your related stories or remembrances of Steve.
God blessed us by giving us time to walk with Steve on this earth, and we look forward to a heavenly walk with him again, pain-free and glorious.
We miss him terribly.
