Dr. Steven Mayer was the founding principal of my school, Thomas R. Grover Middle School. Although I had never known him, his legacy on my school has lived on. His most famous words, "Make someone's day today," became one of our school slogans. There is even an award called the Steven J. Mayer Award, awarded to students who are the most like him and are a role model. May he rest in peace and my thoughts and prayers are with all of you. Let us never forget the loss of a great man for even though he may be gone, his legacy and his impact, will never be gone.

Dear Mayer Family,
Please know my thoughts and prayers are with all of you.
Ryan was in my third grade class many years ago. It was always such a pleasure working with him and your family...a family so warm, supportive, and caring. While in third grade, Ryan became instrumental in helping our class deal with the difficult times of 9/11. Even back then Ryan was such a positive force in our classroom and a natural leader...definitely character traits inherited/learned from his dad.
I did not know Steve very well, but my memories of him are his ever-present smile, his warm friendly ways, and his exuberance. Even though I was retired when he became superintendent, I only heard wonderful comments about everything he did. He made such a positive impact on the district, the faculty, and the students.
He will be missed!

To the Mayer family;
I was part of the second class to graduate from Grover Middle School, in 2001. Mr. Mayer was always one of my favorite parts of being part of that school community. I recall being so impacted by my experiences at Grover that I wrote him a long letter about it right before graduation. It remains one of my proud and humble moments that he first of all, read it, and secondly, actually quoted that letter in his graduation speech, a kind act that still inspires me to share my thoughts with others. I hope to continue working and eventually leading in his example as so beautifully said by your family: to spread the fruits of a strong education to serve the world and help others. My heart breaks for your family, and all of us who were touched by his life will always be sending you strength.
Sincerely, Manisha

I was in the presence of Dr. Mayer only one time, at a Board of Education meeting. I swear that even to this day and upon hearing the news of his passing, I feel as if I had really known him personally. I believe that truly shows the kind of man that he was. Just hearing him speak for a few minutes, I was in awe of his generosity, his humor, and his obvious compassion for what he did. Clearly he had a tremendous impact on so many lives. To the Mayer family, I can not imagine what you are going through and I wish you strength and peace in the coming days.

It is sad to hear of the tragic accident that took Steve's life. I replaced Steven as Principal at JMI in Edison and know what a great relationship he had with his staff and students. My memories of him are quite great as we worked together as administrative colleagues.. My thoughts and prayers are with Donna and the children during this terrible time.

I had Mr. Mayer as my principal at Grover Middle School. My parents still remember him as the principal who would clean cafeteria tables along janitors and direct traffic on busy days. I remember he once gathered all of us 8th graders together to ask us not to kick lockers in a firm, but funny way- he used the word 'gnarly' at one point :) After graduation, I had the privilege of talking to him. I was very shy but he had this way of making me and my immigrant family feel at ease. My parents and I were so sorry to hear about the news of his passing. We will keep him and his family in our prayers.

I had the opportunity know of your husband through my education career, as it spanned Monroe, as well as having colleagues in WWP and Robbinsville, (though I taught in Princeton for more than half of career in education.
Being a sister in faith, I know your husband, Steve, and to the boys, your dad, is at home with our Lord, and although everyone takes comfort in that, it does not make it any easier, this life you now have with the person who was your rock.
The outpouring of love is a testament that "well done, good and faithful servant" and the Lord is well pleased. He has passed on the torch...
I keep you all, wife, Donna, and sons in my daily prayers that the Lord wraps his arms of comfort around you to give you peace in the midst of this unexplainable tragedy.
God bless you all.

Dear Donna, Ryan, Shaun and Kyle,
I didn't know your husband and father. But from the day he went into the Lords arms I couldn't stop reading about him and what everyone was saying about him. I watched the memorial twice once at work so I missed some of it and then when I got home I watched it in its entirety . I felt the love that Dr. Mayer had for the Lord and his family!
Afterwards I thanked God for Dr. Mayer and asked God to help me to be kind, loving and forgiving. At 56 I still struggle with what gifts I have to offer but after watching and reading Dr. Mayer's story I am going to pray harder that God helps me to know them.
Besides my daily prayers and rosary I asked God to help me to continue to walk in faith and everything else will fall into place.
My Deepest condolences to you and your family ❤

I worked with Steve at Grover Middle School. It was my first year as an Instructional Assistant and Steve was supportive and helpful. He was a compassionate Administrator and truly cared about his staff and students as well as the parents and the entire school community. He will truly be missed and I am glad to have had the opportunity to know him.He is truly a saint and Gods messenger. He has touched the hearts of so many and will live on in our hearts until we all meet again in Gods kingdom. May the lord bless you and keep you in his arms during this difficult time. We have lost an icon and a great man but heaven has gained a new and special angel. I know he will be watching over us.

Dear Steve,
We never met, but I heard great things about you from your days serving in my WW-P school district as middle school principal, and then assistant superintendent. We have three things in common: 1) same age. 2) three boys. 3) passion for education. Wish I knew you before, and wish you well in heaven. And I'm sure you'll bless your families from above to live their fullest lives that will make you happy. RIP

Donna. Mary and I are deeply saddened by the news of Steve's passing. We cannot know the depth of your grief. We watched the service online - wonderful celebration and such deep pain at the same time.
I remember painting houses with Steve, small group meetings at your condo, and worshipping together at Princeton. What a great man, friend, and disciple of Jesus. Praying for you and your kids.

My heart breaks for the Mayer family and all those affected by this horrendous tragedy. While I didn't know Steve Mayer, I was shocked and saddened by his untimely death. I watched his memorial service online - I really don't know why I was so affected by the death of someone I never met and never even heard of until this past Tuesday. Perhaps it was our shared love of the Lord. Learning more about his life, his love of family and his love of God and neighbor inspires me. I pray for his wife and sons and all those who knew this spiritual man. May God give you peace and may your memories comfort you. Be assured of my prayers.

Mr. Mayer was my 6th grade teacher at Griebling (1988-1989). I credit him for sparking my interest in science. He encouraged an 11 year old girl to believe she could grow up to be a scientist and I did. I graduated college with a degree in chemical engineering. Countless times throughout my school years and my career I have thought of him and the profound impact he had on me. I can't even begin to imagine how many of his students, like me, were forever changed by him. My thoughts and prayers are with his entire family.

The world has lost a great man, Steve was an inspirational teacher, who had a wealth of knowledge, knew the Word better than most. He was fond of the following quote "Attempt something so great for God that's it's doomed to fail unless God's in it." Great leader, Father, husband, teacher. He has louched many in his life and will be deeply missed. I want to extend my deepest condolences to the entire Mayer family. I was glad to have known Steve as a member of Princeton Alliance church. Will be donating in lieu of flowers to the Steven J. Mayer foundation.

The world has lost one of the best people God ever put on earth. I once said to Steve, he could be what ever he wanted to be in life (said that to others about Steve, as well). This can only mean that that God has some other great plan in mind for him. Very few people touched so many in such a profound way as Steve did in his short life. He was someone who truly made a difference.

We remember Steve Mayer fondly. He was an active member at Princeton Alliance Church. In the mid-to late 1990's, there was a men's softball team of which both Geoff Schmitt, and Steve Mayer were members. They played with other participating men's softball leagues at churches in the local Mercer, Somerset and Middlesex counties.
Steve was very passionate about his favorite cause, Hope Unlimited, which helps street kids in Campinos, Brazil to be able to be trained for a vocation and be productive members of their society.
