Steven T. Michel, 89, of Kalona, passed from this life on Friday, October 10, 2025, at his home. A funeral service will be held on Wednesday, October 15, 2025, at 10:30 AM at St. Peter’s Catholic Church in Cosgrove. Burial will follow at the Angel’s Rest Cemetery northwest of Frytown. Visitation will be held Tuesday, October 14, 2025, from 4 - 7 PM at the Peterseim Funeral Home in Kalona. A memorial fund has been established for Camp Courageous and Hospice Compassus. The Beatty Peterseim Funeral Home is assisting the family.
Steven Thaddeus Michel was born December 1, 1935, in Iowa City, the son of Glen James and Margurite (Droll) Michel. He attended St. Joseph’s Elementary School. Steve enlisted in the United States Marine Corps in 1951 and served during the Korean War. On July 11, 1954, he was united in marriage to Nancy Entrikin. The couple later divorced, and on August 6, 1994, he married Cynthia (Owens) Jacobson. Steve worked as a butcher and often provided meat to various causes and organizations, including Oakdale. He was a member of St. Peter’s Catholic Church and earned the fourth degree in the Knights of Columbus. Steve enjoyed hunting, fishing, mushroom hunting, baseball, butchering, and watching Hawkeye football. He had a huge heart and was always willing to help anyone in need.
Survivors include his wife Cynthia of Kalona, five children: Stephen Michel of Kalona, Richard (Maureen) Michel of Warrenton, Missouri, Lisa Michel (Rocky Poindexter) of Lancaster, California, Seth Michel (Sheila Ritchie) of Kalona, John (Kelly) Michel of Wellman, three step-children: Richard (Margaret) Jacobson of Santa Rosa, California, Michael (Kathy) Jacobson of Hazelton, Iowa, and Marnett (Doug) Meier-Osweiler of South English, a number of grandchildren, great-grandchildren, great-great grandchildren and one brother, Gerald (Joan) Michel of Hills, Iowa.
Preceding Steve in death were his parents, three brothers: Calvin, Richard, and Clayton Michel, an infant sister, Ann, and three adult sisters: Gwendolyn (George) White, Marilyn (Hank) Knebel, and Marlene (Bud) Eden.
