Steven Bryant Montgomery was born in the serene town of Bluefield, West Virginia, on August 25, 1962, to the late Juanita Johnson and Robert Benjamin Montgomery. As the sixth of nine children, Steve grew up in a bustling and loving household. On May 29, 2024, Steve departed from us suddenly and far too soon but just as he wanted, right next to his wife. Despite our grief, we are grateful for the time we shared with him and for the impact he had on our lives.
In 2003, Steve married La'Sonia Thompson, and their union was blessed with four sons: Stephen Montgomery, Kentawn Jackson, Jawuan Jackson, and Shane Montgomery. Steve pursued his education in the Baltimore City Public Schools, attended college courses, and received certification in tax preparation and finance management. His diverse talents and skills were numerous, and he was always ready to lend a hand to those in need.
Steve was truly a jack of all trades. He was a barber, a hairstylist, a baker, a chef, a handyman, an artist, a poet, a master chess player, a stellar salesman, and everything in between but his ultimate passion was being a devoted family man. The scripture from Ephesians 5:25 tells us, "Husbands, love your wives, just as Christ loved the church and gave himself up for her." Steve embodied this love for his wife, Shey, living each day for her and their children and grandchildren. He also shared that love for cheese. His life was a testament to his faith, often sharing how he felt blessed by God and how pivotal Shey was to his journey.
Steve's sense of humor was infectious, capable of lifting spirits even in the darkest moments. We will miss his jokes, his godly wisdom, his culinary delights, and his remarkable home improvement skills.
Steve leaves behind his devoted wife of twenty-nine years, La'Sonia Thompson-Montgomery; his children, Stephen Montgomery, Kentawn Jackson (Shamija), Jawuan Jackson, and Shane Montgomery; and his beloved grandchildren, Keontrai Williams, Sanaa Montgomery, Stephen Montgomery Jr., Semaj Montgomery, Kennedy Jackson, and Rhane Montgomery. He is also survived by his brothers, Joseph Keene and Ronald Montgomery, and his sisters, Rose Montgomery, Denise Montgomery-Pitts, Joyce Montgomery, and Lisa Montgomery. His brothers, Robert and James Montgomery, preceded him in death.
Additionally, Steve is mourned by his sisters-in-law, Diana Ferguson, Josetta Wright, Liz Keene, Renae Montgomery, and Angie Montgomery; and his brothers-in-law, Lawrence Ferguson and Antoine Jones. His brother-in-law, Joseph Thompson, also preceded him in death. Steve leaves behind a host of nephews, nieces, other relatives, and friends who will cherish his memory forever.
In our hearts, Steve will always remain a beacon of love, humor, and unwavering devotion. May we find comfort in our memories of him and in the legacy of kindness and faith he has left behind.
