David L. Montgomery
February 15, 1945 - July 31, 2025
David L. Montgomery, 80, of Decatur, passed away peacefully at 7:08 p.m., July 31, 2025, in his home, with his family by his side after a long battle with leukemia.
David was born on February 15, 1945, to Raymond and Bernice (Buoy) Montgomery in Tuscola, Ill. After graduating from MacArthur High School, he enlisted in the U.S. Marine Corps. David spent most of his time deployed overseas during the Vietnam Era. After proudly serving his country, David worked at York Borg Warner for nearly 10 years. He then joined the Decatur police department in 1976 where he retired after 20 years of service. David then went on to manage Macon County Memorial Park Cemetery for the next 28 years.
David met the love of his life and best friend, Laurie Aderman, and they were married on August 26, 1978, in Decatur. They were married nearly 47 wonderful years.
David loved running his excavator and other heavy equipment. He also enjoyed going to casinos, but most of all, being with his family and especially his grandkids.
David was preceded in death by his parents; brother, Michael Montgomery; sisters, Deanna (Larry) Duvall and Judy (Richard) Carr; brothers-in-law, David Eddy, Bob Pollock, Jeff Wigginton, and Larry Webb; and infant niece, Jami Cooper.
Surviving is his wife, Laurie; children, Shelli Wolfe of Mt Juliet, Tenn., Jarrod Montgomery, Christopher (Monica) Montgomery, Jeffrey (Sarah) Montgomery, all of Decatur, Ill.; grandchildren, Zachary (Julie) Wolfe of Lebanon, Tenn.; Hayley Wolfe of Mt Juliet, Tenn.; Gibson, Remi and Nash Montgomery of Niantic, Carly and Ellie Montgomery of Decatur; great-grandchildren, Christopher, Easton and Kinsley Wolfe of Lebanon, Tenn.; siblings, Marjorie (Joe) Maple of LaPorte, Texas, Donna (Bob) Cooper of Decatur, Pam (John) Siere of Alabama, and Robert Montgomery of Livingston, Texas; bonus grandchildren, Raimi, Kiley, Ivy, Abby, and Charlotte; brothers and sisters-in-law, Lanny Aderman, Keith (Lyndsey) Aderman, June (Eric) Schmidt, Shelley Pollock, Dwight (Shelley) Aderman, Marcie Wigginton and Joyce Webb; many nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.
David was the best husband, father, and grandpa anyone could ever have.
David had the best smile and sense of humor and was always friendly to everyone. He will be so very missed by his family and friends.
A celebration of life will be held on Saturday, September 13, 2025, at 2 p.m. at the Harristown community building, 185 N. Kembark St. Decatur, Ill., with military honors by the Macon County Honor Guard. In lieu of flowers, David requested that memorials in his name be made to
St Jude Children's Research Hospital, a charity close to his heart.
