Obituary published on Legacy.com by Atkins Northland Funeral Home - Cloquet on Oct. 16, 2024.
Steven John Olcott, 74, Proctor, passed away Thursday, October 10, 2024, in the comfort of his home. He was born April 19, 1950, to his parents Guy Russell and Doris (Brockman) Olcott. He was a life-long Duluth resident.
Steve was a proud 1968 graduate of Denfeld High School. He attended UMD for two years before joining the 148th Unit of the Air National Guards and completed 18 years of service.
Steve married Linda Jean Berg on August 29, 1970, at the former Bethlehem Lutheran Church in Proctor and they recently celebrated their 54th wedding anniversary. In 1972, they bought their first and only home in Morgan Park where they raised three sons. They moved four years ago to a condo near Spirit Mountain.
He followed his father's footsteps and began work in 1970 at Diamond Tool & Horseshoe Co. He completed its machinist apprentice program and worked as a journeyman machinist until the plant closed in 1994. He also served as a union steward for several years. He later worked for Oneida Realty as an attendant at Minnesota Power and 4th Avenue parking lots until retiring in 2012.
He was a long-time member of Our Savior's Evangelical Lutheran Church in Duluth. Steve was also a 32-degree Mason and member of Euclid Lodge and Scottish Rite Bodies.
His true passions were hunting and fishing and annual trips to McFarland Lake with his sons and being an active supporter in their youth hockey, baseball and football activities. He was also fond of classic cars, including a 1951 Chevrolet he owned for many years. Steve loved traveling, especially to Hawaii, with his wife, family and close friends. He also enjoyed day road trips along the North Shore and all over Minnesota, especially when the leaves changed color in the fall. He treasured the relationships, progressive dinners and all the gatherings spent with an especially close-knit group of forever friends who are family, too.
He is preceded in death by his parents; brother, G. Curtis and his wife Janet, several aunts and uncles and his beloved Airedale, Bella.
Steve is survived by his loving wife, Linda; three sons, Todd (Jackie) Olcott, Detroit Lakes, MN; Brian (Ashley) Olcott, Duluth, and Michael OlcottSr., Duluth; sister, Margie (Richard) Randolph, Proctor; brother-in-law, Jerry Berg, Proctor; sister-in-law, Julie Berg, Harrodsburg, KY; grandchildren, Wyatt, Reece, Lake, Mikayla, Ryley, Alayna, Acelynn, Kori and Michael Jr., several nieces, nephews, cousins, neighbors and friends.
Special thanks to his Aspirus St Luke's medical team and Aspirus St Luke's Hospice staff who made it possible for him to be home and enjoy the leaves changing color.
Family and friends may gather an hour before the Celebration of Life service at 11 am Friday, October 25, at Atkins-Northland Funeral Home, 801 14th St., Cloquet.
