We are saddened to announce that Steven Dominic Peters (Steve) passed away on July 16, 2025, at age 55 after a four-year battle with Stage IV colon cancer. Steve lived life to the fullest and especially loved cooking, gardening, and spending time at home with his family, friends, and his beloved dogs, Baily and Lulu. A Celebration of Life will be held at Steve's home in Fremont on Saturday, August 23 beginning at 1:00 pm, where we will gather to share our favorite memories of Steve and honor his life. If you would like to attend, please email
[email protected] for more information or refer to the event invitation on Facebook. Steve was born on February 21, 1970, in Appleton to Jack and Kay (Currie) Peters, as their third and youngest child. Raised in Waupaca at the family residence on Stratton Lake, he shared his upbringing with his two older brothers, Sean and Dan. Steve demonstrated an early affinity for swimming and other water sports, acquiring skills that would later enable him to assist others in critical situations. He attended Waupaca High School and graduated in 1988. Steve joined the U.S. Navy at 18 and served for four years on the USS San Bernardino, with those years including the Gulf War. He was extremely proud to be a Navy veteran, which was a family tradition shared by his father and both brothers. He achieved the rank of E-5, Second Class Petty Officer (Operations Specialist) due to his communication and leadership skills. After his time in the Navy, Steve attended UW-Oshkosh and majored in International Studies due to his love of foreign countries, customs and languages. He took those skills and moved to Japan for ten years after graduating, where he taught English to
children, youth and adults. He embraced the Japanese culture with an open heart and loved his time there, mostly living in coastal Bonotsu and spending hours spearfishing lobsters and fish.
Many of Steve's most commendable accomplishments occurred during his 14 years as a US Border Patrol agent, both in McAllen, TX on the southern border and in Oroville, WA on the Canadian border. In Texas, he served on a boat unit on the Rio Grande river as a Vessel Commander for several years. He had a great deal of compassion for the individuals trying to cross into the U.S., saving multiple people from drowning by using his excellent swimming skills and received a Congressional award for his rescue efforts. Human and drug smugglers at the border he conversely pursued with relentless passion, frequently risking his own life. Steve is survived by his wife Liz; brothers Dan Peters and Sean (Jim) Peters; nephew Zach (Jennifer) Berg; nieces Taylor (Seth) Sorenson, Zoe Peters, Nora Peters, Rebecca (Andy) Wagner, Sara (Damien) Moore and Abigail Ellingsworth; in-laws Nick and Ann Marchetta; and many other family and friends. Although Steve is gone, he will live in our hearts forever.
