Steven Glenn Wheaton, born August 29th, 1947 in Los Angeles, California, peacefully passed away in his sleep on Wednesday, October 25th, 2023, due to complications from dementia and heart failure. He was the son of Glenn Arnold Wheaton and Madrienne Strickler Wheaton.
Steven's early years were spent in West Los Angeles, and he graduated from Beverly Hills High School in 1965, and then attended Fresno State for a year. In 1966, he made the noble decision to enlist in the Marine Corps, where he trained as a radio operator. His dedication and commitment led him to officer training school, eventually achieving the rank of Captain. During his time in Vietnam, he served as the supply officer for a MASH unit, a role he took great pride in. His service in the Marine Corps was a source of immense satisfaction and fulfillment.
After his service in the Corps, Steven joined the Utah National Guard, where he developed his computer skills in an era when computers occupied entire rooms. His career then took him into the realm of government civil service as a computer programming analyst while working at the Tooele Army Depot. In 1982, he transferred to the Yuma Proving Ground, where he crossed paths with Pamela Sue Wells in the ward choir. This encounter blossomed into a lifelong partnership, and they were sealed in the Mesa, AZ temple on January 29, 1983.
Subsequently, Steven's career led him to the Dugway Proving Ground. Over the years, the family moved to various locations due to his work, eventually finding a permanent home in Murray, Utah, in 1992. He continued to work in Dugway until his retirement, which was necessitated by health concerns.
Steven had a diverse range of interests and passions, including camping, scouting, family history, and computer games. He actively participated in his local church community, singing in the choir and playing the trombone. He was also a sports enthusiast, having played baseball and football during his lifetime.
Throughout his life, Steven embraced various church callings, including Elder's Quorum teacher, Building security specialist, primary teacher, nursery leader, Young Men's president, and home teacher. His commitment to scouting was noteworthy, and he completed Wood Badge training.
He is survived by his beloved wife, Pamela Sue, and his nine children: Darrin, Eric, Matthew, Jeremy, Adam, Zack, Emily, Lindsay, and Marc. He was preceded in death by his parents, Glenn Arnold Wheaton and Madrienne Strickler Wheaton.
The family would like to extend their heartfelt gratitude to the Veterans Administration for their years of medical care. Additionally, they wish to express their appreciation to the nurses and CNAs of Superior Home Health and Hospice for their tender care.
Services to celebrate Steven's life will be held on Wednesday, November 1st, at the Murray North Stake Center, located at 5200 South Glendon Street in Murray, Utah. The viewing will commence at 10:00 am, followed by the funeral service at 11:00 am. Steven will be laid to rest at the Memorial Estates Cemetery, situated at 6500 South Redwood Road in West Jordan.
