On January 23, 2025, Stewart Robertson MacDonald entered into the presence of God.
Stewart was born August 3, 1931, in Detroit. His parents were Donald Edward MacDonald and Irene Stewart MacDonald. He came to live in Algonac with his grandparents Captain Harvey A. Stewart and Maud Stewart at two years of age. He lived in Algonac most of his life
He attended schools in the Algonac school systems and graduated June 15, 195O. He attended the University of Detroit and graduated with a Bachelor of Philosophy degree on June 16, 1955.
Stewart married the love of his life, Dinah Louise Eastop on June 6, 1954, and they remained married until her death on 03/25/2006,
Stewart served in the United States Army from 09/14/1955-08/12/1957 attaining the rank of Private First Class.
After his military service, he began his teaching career. He taught at St. Joseph School for Boys until he accepted a position at Marysville Public Schools in 1959. He retired in 1993. Stewart was a dedicated teacher sharing his love of English literature with his students. He was well known for his unique teaching style. His students fondly referred to him as "Uncle Mac".
Stewart was baptized on 11/30/1931 at St. Andrew's Episcopal Church in Algonac, MI. He was active in the Episcopal Church from his childhood. He became a Lay Reader/Worship Leader in 1950 and continued in that role until 2015. He was a licensed preacher and served as lector until his death. He was attending Holy Family Episcopal Church, St. Clair, MI at the time of his death. Stewart also served as church organist at Saint Paul's Episcopal Church on Harsen's Island, Michigan for 5 years and serve as organist at Saint Andrew's Episcopal Church in Algonac for 22 years.
Stewart was a true renaissance man. In addition to his love of the organ and piano, he had great love of literature and would often quote poetry, was a consummate storyteller and talented preacher, he had a great love for the freighters that plied the waters of his much-loved St. Clair River having sailed with his grandfather, Captain Stewart until the captain retired. Stewart was also a great model train enthusiast and devoted a lot of his time to working on his train layout. He also spent time building Great Lakes ship models. He was an enthusiastic bicyclist and could be seen most days either riding his bike or walking one of his dearly loved dogs.
Stewart is survived by his beloved children, Sheila L. MacDonald, Lorna J. MacDonald, William A.S. MacDonald and Heather E. MacDonald, his dear niece and nephew, Jean MacDonald and James MacDonald (Yayoi Mac) He is also survived by his cherished grandchildren, Millicent Lehman(Heather Taylor), Spencyr Wickman, and Olivya Lehman(Joshua Carman), his precious great-grandchildren, Oliver Lehman, Oakley Lehman, Quinn Wickman, Finley Wickman and Cian Wickman, and his good friends Jeanette Ettin and Margaret Heaslip. He was predeceased by his dearest wife, Dinah Louise Eastop MacDonald, his treasured son, James H.U. MacDonald, his beloved siblings, brothers Donald and Allan MacDonald and sister, Alice Wilhelme.
Stewart left one last message for his treasured students. "Uncle Mac says you still have to get your homework done."
Funeral service will be held at 12:00 p.m. on Saturday February 1st at Holy Family Episcopal Church, St. Clair. Visitation will be one hour prior to the service. Interment will follow at Oaklawn Cemetery, Clay Twp.

I had Uncle Mac for a couple of classes in the 70s. We all liked him for his personality. He was a good teacher, and knew how to motivate us.
