Stoney Allen McClain, age 30, passed away on May 9, 2025, in
Albuquerque, New Mexico. Born on March 17, 1995, in the same city he called home throughout his life, Stoney brought light and joy to those around him from the very beginning.
A proud graduate of La Cueva High School in 2012, Stoney continued his education by taking classes at both Central New Mexico Community College (CNM) and the University of New Mexico (UNM). From an early age, it was clear that Stoney had inherited his father's love and talent for both art and music. His musical journey began in middle school and flourished as he earned the position of first chair bass player in the Desert Ridge Middle School Orchestra, the La Cueva High School Orchestra, and the prestigious New Mexico Youth Symphony Orchestra (NMYSO). With NMYSO, he had the honor of performing in numerous beautifully choreographed symphony concerts at Popejoy Hall, New Mexico's premier performing arts center.
Stoney carried his passion for excellence into every job he held. Known for his strong work ethic and dedication, he explored various careers before ultimately turning his love for video gaming into a fulfilling profession. This decision reflected not only his talents but also his determination to live authentically and pursue what truly made him happy.
Beyond his professional and artistic achievements, Stoney was a man of many passions. He enjoyed playing softball and basketball with his brother Cody and their close-knit group of friends and teammates. He embraced adventure with a fearless spirit-skydiving, riding four-wheelers and motorcycles, and snowboarding were among his favorite thrills. Yet he also cherished quieter moments: swimming, camping, playing frisbee golf with Cody, or simply relaxing with family and friends.
Stoney's love for music extended into his spiritual life as well. Over the years, he played bass in several church music groups, sharing his gift in worship settings that brought people together through song.
He is lovingly remembered by his mother Carrie McClain; his father Robert McClain; his daddy Robert Velasquez; his brother Cody Velasquez; his beloved son August McClain; aunts Carolyn Horton, Jerry Lung, Renee Sachs, Leanne Algire, Nadine Velasquez, and Celeste (John) Cruz; uncle Jonathon Allen; grandmothers Louise Allen and Angeline Velasquez; numerous cousins; and many dear friends.
Stoney now joins those who preceded him in death: his aunt Deborah (Grady) Waldrop; uncles Dick McClain, J.W. Allen Jr., Lonnie Allen and Roger Lung; grandparents Walter and Mary McClain, J.W. Allen Sr., Faye and Robert Jones, and Robert A. Velasquez.
Those who knew Stoney will remember him as an exceptionally good baby who grew into a happy child-and later a considerate, loving, kind-hearted man who was generous with both time and affection. His loyalty to family and friends was unwavering.
Tributes from loved ones reflect the deep impact he made:
From Mom:
"MY MIND STILL TALKS TO YOU and MY HEART STILL LOOKS FOR YOU but MY SOUL KNOWS I'LL SOON HOLD YOU AGAIN IN MY ARMS FOR ETERNITY WHEN I JOIN YOU IN HEAVEN."
From Cody:
"His life earnest, his actions kind, a willing hand, an active mind. A loving brother and faithful friend."
From Aunt Jerry:
"Stoney was a wonderful nephew and always such a joy to be with. Now he's fishing in heaven with his uncle Roger. He will be truly missed."
May Stoney's memory bring comfort to all who knew him-and may the music he created continue to echo in the hearts of those who loved him.
