Stuart Schloss Obituary

Stuart Schloss
February 27, 2024
Stuart Schloss, age 82, of Shelton, CT, passed away peacefully on Tuesday, February 27, 2024, at Yale New Haven Hospital, surrounded by his beloved family and closest friends. Stuart was born in Bridgeport, CT, to Ida and Sidney Schloss. When he was 14 years old, he decided he wanted to quit high school after he turned 16, in order to expand his father's single paint store into a number of chain stores. A few years later, Jack Botarro, Stuart's Industrial Arts teacher took the time to go to the store to talk Stuart into returning to school to get his GED. Stuart asked Jack what he wanted to buy, and he replied he was there only to talk to him about school. Stuart was so impressed Jack cared enough about him and his education that he returned to school to obtain his GED. Stuart continued a relationship with Jack throughout the years.
He married the love of his life, Gerri Ruben, on September 16, 1962. Stuart was the President and entrepreneur of Paint Products Company.
His volunteerism knew no bounds. Stuart helped founder Tony Forney establish the McGiveny Community Center in Bridgeport. He enjoyed working with the Bridgeport Youth at Risk program. When his daughters were young, he proudly served on the House Committee of Congregation B'nai Israel.
At Paint Products, he established the Good Guys club for neighborhood youth, to give them incentives to remain in school and inspire them to act in an upright manner. He remained friends with two of these now well-established grown men. They are so appreciative of Stuart's guidance and help during such a tender time in their lives.
In his retirement, he volunteered at Bridgeport Hospital for many years. He also guided potential business owners through a program at the University of Bridgeport.
Stuart had both the softest and largest heart. He helped countless people, both those he knew and just met, in the most generous and abundant ways. Ron Hall, who did not know him, precisely describes Stuart's personality in this quote: "Together we can change the world, just one random act of kindness at a time."
Stuart is survived by his devoted wife of almost 62 years, Gerri, his cherished daughters, Deborah Jill Schloss, son-in-law, Eljay Waldman, and Marcie Beth and Bruce Lipsey, treasured grandchildren, Adam, Priya, and Jared, his brother and sister-in-law, Freddy and Sue Ruben, and his uncle, Sheldon Elins. Stuart was also pre-deceased by his sister, Phyllis.
Funeral services will be held on Thursday, February 29, 2024 at 11:00 a.m. from The Abraham L. Green and Son Funeral Home, 88 Beach Road, Fairfield, CT, 06824, (friends are invited at 10:15 a.m.) with interment following at Loyalty Cemetery, 172 Burroughs Road in Fairfield. Memorial contributions may be made to Tunnel to Towers Foundation ( t2t.org ) or to a charity of one's choice. Shiva will be PRIVATE.

Dear Gerri,

I just learned of Stuart´s passing. How sad. What a loss.

He was my buddy, my partner in Youth At Risk, an inspiring community benefactor... a good guy whom I often think about and will always remember.

Please accept my heartfelt condolences and take care.

With love,
Marty

My heartfelt condolences to Gerri and Stu´s family. I remember going to Paint Products many times as a youngster with my father when I was "enlisted" to help him paint homes during summer breaks from school. By then he and Stu were good friends and he would never buy painting supplies anywhere else. My father had a weak spot for quality paint brushes, and if Stu saw him hesitate about cost, he dropped the price on the spot. Stu was always happy and friendly and he and Gerri were regulars at my father´s major birthday gatherings. He will be greatly missed.

Stuart and Sid were two of the kindest and most generous people i have ever known. When I was appointed Pastor of Holy Rosary Catholic Church in Bridgeport the parish rectory was in deplorable condition. Paint Products supplied all the necessary paint and wallpaper which allowed students at Bullard Havens to take on as their school project the painting and wallpapering of my residence. These two outstanding Jewish gentlemen were honored to be able to help a poor, struggling Catholic parish.
I will never forget them. They will forever be in my thoughts and prayers.

Dearest Schloss Family, Wirds cannot describe the live a d gratitude my whole family had for the Schloss Family. I remember Stuart when I was a little girl at his first store. My dad started his own very successful AAAngelo Painting Contracting business by buying all his Dutch Boy Paints exclusively from Stuart and Sid. My family loved the Schloss Family. Sid and Stuart loved my dad so much that they would honor his birthday with a large cake from Ann´s Bakery every year. My father´s business started in 1962. His business flourished bc of the quality paint, service, and dedication that he received from the Original Paint Products. He loved us to Easton, Ct to live a beautiful childhood. Our whole family loved Stuart and Sid. My father´s name was Angelo Amaranto and he loved the Schloss´s. I do this in his memory from heaven. I know they are there greeting each other along with Angelo Jr. wishing you much love and peace knowing that Stuart is with God and all whom loved.

As the unofficial "mayor" of Pepperidge Circle, Stuart was always ready to help anyone in need. I could name many charitable donations that Stuart supported, but the one that was most touching was his support of my late daughter Joan who passed away in 1975. He went to Yale New Haven every day to visit with her. Sincere condolences.

The residents of the Hollander House were beneficiaries of Stuart's geneosity. For years, he provided buses to take any resident who wanted to attend to Positano, its original location and then its newer location, for a holiday lunch. The residents and the staff at the Hollander House mourn his loss and celebrate his amazing life.
