Waynesville, Sue Penland Kates, 98, passed away on Monday, May 22, 2023 at Haywood Lodge & Retirement Centers.
A native of Buncombe County, she was a daughter of the late Cash and Kathleen Eppley Penland. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Reverend Alcy "Junior" Kates, Jr. of 80 years, he died in 2023; five sisters and six brothers. Sue retired after 30 years with Wellco. She was the fourth out of 12 siblings. Sue enjoyed crocheting and working in her flowers, above all she loved the Lord and people.
Sue is survived by a son, Carroll James Kates (Carol), of Cumming, Georgia; brother, Doug Penland; two grandchildren, Davin (Teresa) and Jana Kates; two great-grandchildren, Tyler and Sarah Kates; and many nieces and nephews.
A funeral service will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Friday, May 26, 2023 in the Waynesville chapel of Wells Funeral Home with Reverend Gary Putnam and Reverend Kris Estep officiating. Burial will follow at Garrett-Hillcrest Memorial Park. The family will receive friends from 12:30 p.m. until service time at the funeral home.
Memorials may be made to Shriners Hospital for Children, 950 West Farris Road, Greenville, SC 29605.
The care of Mrs. Kates has been entrusted to Wells Funeral Home of Waynesville.
