Sue Caryl Backhoff (nee Sawyer) (Susie, mom, grandma and GG) 88, passed away on December 29, 2025, in New Lenox, IL. Born on February 26, 1937, Sue was known for her vibrant and outgoing personality, always bringing life and sincerity to every interaction.
Sue's professional life was largely dedicated to her role at Strike and Spare II, where she served as bar manager and bartender for over 45 years. Her commitment to her work lasted until she was 83 and part time, only stepping back due to the Covid pandemic. Her presence at the establishment was not just as an employee but a cherished part of the community she helped foster. Family was the cornerstone of Sue's life. She is survived by her children, Peggy (Theodore) Fox, William (Kristie) Backhoff, and John Backhoff, who resides in Japan. Sue was a proud grandmother to James (Theresa) Fox, Kevin Fox, Tyler (Ashley) Backhoff, Jacob (Nikki) ("best grandson") Backhoff and Lindsay Backhoff, and her grandchildren in Japan: Lloyd, Arthur, Jessica and Lillian Backhoff. Her joy continued to grow with her great-grandchildren, Bennett and Logan Fox, Rowan and Everett Backhoff, Payden, Colt and Taw Backhoff. She also leaves behind her beloved niece, Sally Marusarz. Sue was preceded in death by her loving partner of 46 years, Michael H. Koskiewicz (Kos), and her parents, Jessica and Joseph Sawyer.
Beyond her family and career, Sue had a rich life filled with hobbies that brought her joy. She loved crocheting, reading, sewing and was a master at card games like wild rummy and euchre. An avid fan of the Chicago Cubs, Elmo and earrings, she also enjoyed her favorite drinks, champagne and Southern Comfort and regularly getting her hair and nails done.
A celebration of Sue's life will be held at Strike and Spare II, Lockport on March 7th, 2026, from 1-4pm. This gathering will honor her memory and the indelible mark she left on the hearts of those she met. Her legacy of kindness, hard work, and vibrant spirit will be remembered by all who knew her.
