And let us not grow weary in well-doing, for in due season we shall reap, if we do not lose heart. So then, as we have opportunity, let us do good to all men, and especially to those who are of the household of faith. Galatians 6:9-10, RSV.
Sue Carol Burns, age 86, died peacefully on March 14, 2024, following a years-long battle with Parkinson's Disease. Born on October 3, 1937, in Cincinnati Ohio, Sue was the only child of Myrtle and Simon ("Sam") Dunlap.
In Sue's early years, she and her parents lived in the West End of Cincinnati. When she was just 11 years old she met the love of her life, Hordie ("Sonny") Edgar Burns, Jr., and spent much of her time in class doodling his and her names in her notebooks. Sue was confirmed at the age of 12. Thereafter, she attended Hughes High School, where she was a member of Tau Nu Tau.
Sue married Sonny at St. Francis De Sales Parish in the Walnut Hills neighborhood of Cincinnati, Ohio. Early in her marriage, Sue was a stay-at-home mom, who cared for her sons, Michael Avery Burns and David Edgar Burns, until they were school aged. She then began her career as an Administrative Assistant at Sycamore High School in Cincinnati, where she remained until going to work for Archbishop Moeller High School, where she stayed until her retirement in the mid-90's.
Throughout her adulthood, Sue was committed to tangible acts of service towards others. She believed in showing up when people needed a hand and helping out however she could. Although she was comfortably introverted, she had a quick wit and could make a sailor (or just her grandchildren) blush. Sue was an avid reader, who loved mysteries, all genres of fiction, and an occasional romance novel. She enjoyed knitting and quilting, watching football on Saturdays, bragging about her grandchildren, and a good long-island iced tea.
Sue was predeceased by her husband, who passed away on January 26, 1985. The only child to Myrtle and Simon, Sue faithfully cared for her father and mother in their later years, until they predeceased her in death in 2007 and 2013, respectfully. Sue is survived by her sons, Michael and David (Kunsuk Cho), her grandchildren Brooke Jackson (Matthew), Mychael William Simon Burns, Joshua Yung-hi Burns, great-grandchildren, Miles, Elias, and Olivia-Grace Jackson, sister-in-law, Georgette Burns, and a host of nieces, nephews, and cousins.
Graveside services will be held on Saturday April 13, 2024 at 11:00am. at Gate of Heaven Cemetery 11001 Montgomery Rd Montgomery, OH 45242. Online condolences at www.strawserfuneralhome.com
