Surrounded by her devoted husband and loving daughters, Sue Crumley Byrd passed away on March 30, 2022. Sue was a creative, curious, and clever person. Sue was an extrovert and loved meeting and talking to people. She was also an exceptional painter, crafter, and a lifelong patron of the arts. She was an avid gardener who loved collecting orchids, enjoyed spending time watching the hummingbirds and was a cat whisperer. She loved basketball and cheering for the Tennessee Vols. Above all, Sue was a loving and devoted wife and a nurturer of her children and grandchildren. She was a devout Christian, and her love for Jesus was unwavering.
Growing up, Sue spent her summers enjoying her Norris Craft boat on Norris Lake, working at the country club as a lifeguard, and cheerleading for the LaFollette Owls. Sue then devoted herself to married life and raising her children. After raising her children, Sue's natural creativity led her to pursue a career in hair styling and establish Shear Designs Salon in LaFollette, Tennessee. Hair stylist was a natural fit for Sue's love of fashion and her effervescent and outgoing personality, and when her clients came in for a "Sue Doo," they left feeling beautiful, refreshed, and at ease.
Sue retired early to Sebring, Florida with Jim. She loved the sunshine and perfect weather for gardening. Sue and Jim visited the beach often, made many new friends, and played cards and dominoes until the wee hours of the morning.
Sue spent her final years in Royston, Georgia with Jim, her daughter, Jamie and son-in-law, Cliff Mize. Sue was lovingly and dutifully cared for at home by her family and the Amedisys Hospice team until her passing.
Sue was preceded in death by her parents, Mac Haynes Crumley, Sr. and Thelma Sharp Crumley; her older sister, Gail Peters; beloved younger sister, Alice Ray Crumley; father and mother-in-law, Elmer and Nora Byrd; and brother-in-law Conrad Troutman, Jr.
Sue is survived by her devoted husband of 61 years, James "Jim" Elmer Byrd; daughters, Jamie Mize and spouse, Cliff Mize of Royston, Georgia, Kelli Peak and spouse, Rick Peak of Church Hill, Tennessee, and Holly Byrd and spouse, Erica Byrd of Decatur, Georgia; siblings, Mac Crumley, Jr. and spouse, Betty and June Ann Perkins and spouse, Michael; six grandchildren, Grant Goodman, Katelynn McConnell, Krista Price, Vincent Byrd, Louis Byrd and Elise Byrd; sister-in-law, Sue Troutman of LaFollette, Tennessee; brother-in-law, Victor Byrd of Long Beach, California; along with many other nieces, nephews and other relations. She will be dearly missed by all who knew and loved her. Her family takes comfort knowing that she is free from any suffering and that they will see her once more in Heaven.
The family will hold a celebration of life for Sue on Norris Lake in LaFollette, Tennessee during the summer with additional details to be announced later. In lieu of flowers, the family request donations be made in Sue's name to the Alzheimer's Foundation or any other Alzheimer's or Dementia charity of choice.
