Sue Hunter Obituary

Obituary published on Legacy.com by McKoon Funeral Home & Crematory on Mar. 9, 2026.
Sue Young Hunter was born on December 15, 1932, in Irwin County, Georgia, to Gilbert Young and Dulcie Lou Fry. She grew up on a peanut, tobacco, and sugarcane farm in South Georgia, where she learned the values of hard work and faith that would guide her throughout her life.

On Easter Sunday in 1946, at the age of 13, Sue joined Ocilla Primitive Baptist Church, beginning a lifelong walk with the Lord. After graduating from high school, she attended Berry College in Rome, Georgia, working her way through school as part of the college's work program.

Following her graduation, Sue began teaching business education in the Coweta County School System. While teaching a Veterans Night Class, she met her future husband, Leonard "Babo" Hunter. They were married on August 19, 1956, in Ocilla, Georgia. After their marriage, Sue joined White Oak ARP Church, where she faithfully served for many years. Throughout the years, she served as choir director, as a teacher to both youth and adults, and as a devoted member of the Sisters in Christ Bible Study.

On April 20, 1961, their lives were forever changed with the birth of their twin daughters, Lynne and Lisa. Their family life centered around caring for the girls and tending to farm responsibilities. They built their home on Sid Hunter Road in Senoia, Georgia, where many cherished memories were made.

Sue was preceded in death by her husband, Leonard "Babo" Hunter. She is survived by her daughters, Lynne Hunter Dodds (Mark) and Lisa Hunter Houston (Mike); grandchildren, Nathaniel Dodds (Carly), Zach Houston (Emily), James Dodds, and Greg Houston; and great-granddaughter, Olivia Houston.

Sue taught in the Coweta County School System for 30 years. In 1986, she was honored as Coweta County's Teacher of the Year. She was also a charter member of Alpha Delta Kappa, a professional teachers' sorority in Coweta County, and remained active in the organization throughout her life.

Above all, Sue loved her family. She found great joy in spending time with them and serving them. But her greatest love was for her Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ. She lived her life faithfully for Him, serving God in both public ministry and quiet devotion.

Even in her final season of life, Sue continued to reflect Christ's love. Over the past year, she was a source of inspiration to those who cared for her at Avalon Rehab and The Benton House of Newnan.

The family would like to extend a very special thank you to Mary Hand, whose loving care, faithful friendship, and devoted support were such a blessing to Mrs. Sue Hunter during the last five years of her life. They are also deeply grateful to the wonderful staff and physical therapists at Avalon Rehab, the caring team at The Benton House of Newnan, and Earth Angels for the kindness, compassion, and support shown to her.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests that contributions be made to the General Fund of White Oak ARP Church, 2796 Gordon Road, Senoia, GA 30276.

Condolences may be expressed to the family online at www.mckoon.com.
