Suk Ho Kang, age 88, passed away on August 11, 2024. He is survived by his wife, Ji Shun Kang, his daughter and her husband, Jennifer and Lynn Jang of Mclean, VA, and his two grandchildren, Olivia and Kyle. He was born on May 16, 1936, in Seoul, South Korea. He graduated from Yonsei University School of Medicine in 1961. After graduation, he became a Korean Army officer and started his career as a Medical Doctor. In 1965, he married his beloved wife, Ji Shun Song, and in 1969, they came to the United States for him to undergo further medical training with plans to return to Korea. He did his internship and residency, specializing in Pediatrics, starting out in Milwaukee, Philadelphia, Cleveland, and ultimately settled in Akron, Ohio, to help with the physician shortage at the time. Little did he know then that he'd settle down in a small town called Stow, and become the most enthusiastic spokesperson for the state of Ohio over the coming decades.
Dr. Kang was a quiet, devoted man, who was most content at his office in Cuyahoga Falls or at home. A trademark feature in his office was a wall of school photos of hundreds of his patients, maybe even thousands, collected over the years. His walk was more brisk and energetic when at the office or making rounds at Akron Children's. What he did, he did with unwavering commitment. Dr. Kang didn't know how not to care, and habitually called patients to follow up and make sure a treatment showed improvement, and he loved running into them at the local Dairy Queen or Walmart. Having practiced well over 40 years, multi-generational patients were not uncommon. When he wasn't being a doctor, which was rare, he loved Korean history, cowboy and action films, and was surprisingly funny given his unassuming personality. He may have not looked like a typical member of the Dawg Pound but he was an avid follower of the Cleveland Browns, the Cleveland Cavaliers -- even after LeBron left, and was an incredibly loyal friend, making regular phone calls with friends from elementary school on. He lived out his quiet faith by serving whomever came into his path, and was a member of Korean Central Presbyterian Church for decades. A devoted husband, father and grandfather, his greatest legacy is left with his wife, Ji Shun Kang, daughter Jennifer Haewon Jang and son-in-law Lynn Jang, and his two beloved grandchildren, Olivia Mihae and Kyle Taewon.
Memorial Service will be held 11:00 AM FRIDAY, August 16 at the Billow FAIRLAWN Chapel, 85 N. Miller Rd. Akron, OH 44333.
