Sumner Waring Obituary

Published by Waring Sullivan Cherry Place Funeral and Cremation Service on Oct. 8, 2010.
FALL RIVER - Sumner James "Jim" Waring, Jr., age 74, a 4th generation Funeral Service Professional for over 50 years and Chairman of Affiliated Family Funeral Service, died Wednesday, October 6, 2010, in Fall River surrounded by his family after a valiant effort to combat cancer. He was the husband of Elizabeth "Liz" A. (Westgate) Waring, with whom he recently celebrated their 45th wedding anniversary.

Born in Fall River, son of the late Sumner J. Waring, Sr., and Louise (Borden) Waring, he resided in Fall River during his youth, Swansea for 30 years, Westport Harbor and New Smyrna Beach, Florida.

Jim attended Fall River Public Schools, was a graduate of the Choate School, Babson College, and the former New England Institute of Applied Arts and Sciences (NEI) where he was "Outstanding Member" of his 1960 graduating class. He later served as Chairman of the Board of Trustees of NEI and Board of Overseers at Mt. Ida College. In 1990 he received an Honorary Doctorate in Law from Mt. Ida.

A Funeral Service devotee, caring for families with compassion and the deceased with Dignity was his life's devotion. Joining his family's funeral home in 1958, Jim led the Waring firm, founded in 1871 by his great-grandfather, Henry J. Waring, to serve all faiths and nationalities, regardless of financial circumstance. In 1990, Sumner James "Jay" Waring, III, the 5th generation, joined the firm and with his Dad expanded their business to 19 funeral homes throughout Eastern Massachusetts. In 1996, the firm joined Service Corporation International and the Dignity Memorial network which is the world's largest publicly-owned funeral service company headquartered in Houston, Texas.

Jim was Past President of the National Funeral Directors Association, the Massachusetts Funeral Directors Association, a founding member and Vice President of the International Funeral Directors Association and past Chairman of the Massachusetts State Board of Embalming and Funeral Directing.

A dedicated leader and volunteer for many local, regional and national causes, countless organizations have benefited from Jim's insight, commitment and boundless energy. Deeply committed to the City of Fall River, his family's proud heritage dates back to his great, great-grandfather, Nathaniel Borden, who was the second Mayor of Fall River and later a United States Representative.

He was President and later Chairman of the Board of Trustees of Adams House for 38 years, and spearheaded the establishment of the area's first residential retirement community, "Bay View."

Past President of the Fall River Chamber of Commerce, Jim was named Outstanding Citizen of the Year in 1986. A member of the Fall River Rotary Club since 1961, he served as President during its 50th Anniversary and he received the Paul Harris Fellow Award. He was appointed Trustee of the Board of SMU, now UMass Dartmouth, by the late Governor Francis Sargent and again by Governor Michael Dukakis and served as Vice Chairman and Treasurer. He also served on the Board of Massachusetts Maritime Academy, the Southern New England School of Law and the Commonwealth Institute of Funeral Service in Houston, Texas. A member of the BCC Foundation and the Board of Higher Education, he was Chairman of the Fall River Drop-Out Task Force and was a founding member of the Fall River Regional Task Force, a group of area business leaders who formed a think-tank to advise city government on issues impacting Fall River. He also served on the Massachusetts Judicial Nominating Council and the Fall River-New Bedford CEO Group.

Jim's community service also included serving on the Boards of the former Truesdale and Charlton Hospitals where he was named an Honorary Trustee, the Presidents Council of Charlton Memorial Hospital, the Fall River Historical Society, Secretary of the B.M.C. Durfee High School Athletic Association, which recently named a scholarship in his honor, the Community Foundation of Southeastern Massachusetts, the Town of Swansea Finance and Advisory Board, the YMCA, the Greater Fall River Foundation, United Way, Council of Churches, Citizens Scholarship Foundation, District Nursing Association, Hospice Outreach of Greater Fall River, National Hospice Foundation, Fall River Marine Museum and the Museum of Funeral History. In 1996, the Moby Dick Council honored him with the Good Scout Award.

He also served on the Board of Directors of the former Fall River National Bank, Troy and Lafayette Cooperative Banks, Incorporator of Citizens Savings Bank, the Regional Advisory Board for Bank Boston and Congdon and Carpenter Company.

He was a lifelong member of the First Congregational Church in Fall River where he served as Chairman of the Board of Deacons and also its Prudential and Sarah Brayton Fund Committees. In addition, he recently became a member of the United Congregational Church in Little Compton.

Jim was a member of the Fall River Country Club, New Bedford Country Club, Acoaxet Club, Quequechan Club, Beverly Yacht Club, Algonquin Club, Sugar Mill Country Club and Smyrna Yacht Club.

An avid sports fan, he loved every Boston sports team and attended 47 consecutive Red Sox opening days. A deeply loyal friend to all, Jim shared many happy times with his pals at thousands of sporting events throughout his life.

In addition to his wife, "Liz," he leaves a son, Sumner J. "Jay" Waring, III and his wife, Kristin of Mattapoisett and Houston, Texas; a daughter, Christine E. Waring of Providence, RI; a sister, Sally Buffinton and her husband, Thomas of Marion, MA; 3 granddaughters, Abigail, Elizabeth and Frances Waring; mother-in-law, Muriel Westgate Emerson of Fall River, MA; and several nieces and nephews.

He was the brother of the late Barbara Chamberlain and step-son of the late B. Ellen (Frost Haley) Waring.

His Funeral Service will be held Tuesday, October 12, 2010, at 10 a.m. in the First Congregational Church, 282 Rock Street, Fall River. Visiting hours Sunday from 3 to 6 p.m. and Monday from 3 to 6 p.m., in the WARING-SULLIVAN HOME OF MEMORIAL TRIBUTE at CHERRY PLACE, 178 Winter Street, (between Cherry and Locust Streets) Fall River.

Dear Liz,,

My deepest sympathy to you, your children, and your extended family and friends. I was very saddened to learn of his passing, but my sorrow is tempered somewhat by fond memories of Jim, in Swansea, so many years ago.

I was raised there in the 1940s and 1950s and remember Jim (at that time he was "Jimmy" and I was "Lonny") with great affection and fondness. We were both members of the extended Bliss family, which (as you know) held reunions every Labor Day. He was always cheerful and supportive, and I considered him a great role model (and still do). I remember so clearly sitting with him in South Swansea, eating the traditional chicken salad, baked beans, and corn, and discussing topics such as what it was like to attend college (he got there first) and different models of cars and so many other topics.

Years later, I was pleased to connect with Jim and meet you at the reunion in Fall River. We picked up a conversation about old Packards where we had left off decades before!

Based on my recollections of Jim as a child and young man it never surprised me that he became a highly successful businessman and a true leader for so many worthwhile charitable and civic causes.

His passing is a major loss to his family, and to the community.

I just recently learned of Mr. Waring's passing and extend my sincere condolences.

Although encounters with him were few and brief, I found his enthusiasm and determination most admirable and enjoyable. In particular, I fondly recall "May I share an Observation". As a man of varied and innumerable travails, he observed much and had much to share. May he rest in peace.

I was saddened to hear of the loss of your dad. Mr. Waring (as I new him) was a man I had much respect for. He was always gracious and forever professional. The "Funeral Service" Industry has lost one of a kind. His presence will be very difficult to replace.
Please give my condolences to your family. My thoughts and prayers will be with you.

Dear Liz, Christine, Jay and the entire Waring family,

Betsy and I, our kids and our parents, and even their parents have all had such a wonderful relationship with Jim and your family over the years that it would be hard to put so many feelings from so many people into appropriate and adequate words, but I will try to share just a few from my point of view.

We echo the many kind words which were so perfectly used at the service, by you and by those who also loved and admired Jim. It was a fabulous and dignified tribute you should be proud to have been able to deliver for him.

Jim had such a profound impact on our community and on the success of all his friends whom he chose to support, as well as on all those who relied on him to make the grief process a natural, simple and successful one. He was certainly a professional. To merely skim the surface, I'd say we all appreciated Jim for his ability to make the grieving process so much easier, we admired Jim for his achievements and enthusiasm, and we loved him for his caring, his candor, his humor and his zest for life.

In recalling some of my fond personal memories, I can't help but grin to remember his off the cuff remarks (or Sumnersisms) heard at parties in Dick's barn, at dinners in Laguna, or even from the back of the car on the way to the Super Bowl in New Orleans, or en route to Foxboro or Fenway. Although I cannot "verify his vociferous vocabulary"... his explanation of the self-prescribed "HalfaDiet" was priceless. Our sons enjoyed him writing off a 2.5 hour snorefest in the back seat with "Gee, I must have dozed off there for a minute". I can assure you I will never hear the word "nightcap" again without thinking of Jim...he wanted to enjoy good times with his friends for as long as they could last.

We were honored to be included in your once-in-a-millenium New Years Eve celebration chez Waring, and one of many who he generously invited to opening day. I enjoyed tailgating and cheering in the stands with Jim at Harvard.

Besides encouraging their success, Jim was vigorous in standing up for his friends, one of many qualities I take away from having the pleasure of knowing him. He got to the point, and was convincing.

Betsy and I, our entire family and especially Dick and Betty will miss Jim very much, and we know you will miss him so much more.

It would be very easy to be sad at such a time, but we are happy to have known him as well as we did, and cherish so many fun times with him.
He lived a tremendous life!

I heard there was a guy who bought the funeral parlor near Fenway Park so he wouldn't be late for any game. When we finally met, I didn't have the nerve to ask if he was the guy. We talked about music and baseball. I didn't think he would remember me, but out of the blue came a letter saying he liked the baseball book I wrote. It was more moving than any fan letter you could imagine.

To The Waring Family,

My day was brightened many times over the years when I'd get an unexpected note from Mr. Waring about a significant milestone or accomplishment in my life. While Mr. Waring was clearly successful in the 'big' things in his life, he definitely paid attention to the 'little' things as well.

May he rest in peace.

Jim is a man who will be sorely missed by more people in more places that I can even imagine. He touched so many lives. He has helped our family professionally too many times over the years, for which I will always be grateful. But it is his warmth, friendship, and wonderful personality that I will remember, treasure, and miss the most. I wish I could be there to help you and your family as Jim was there for me and mine, and yet here I sit, miles away, sadly unable to return the favor. You are in our thoughts and prayers.

To Jay and the entire Waring family:
I first met Mr. Waring face to face in 1994 when I helped with the funeral of Officer Thomas J. Giunta. Since that time I have worked with him, helping with the arrangments for several fallen officers in this city and others, retired officers, and numerous dignitaries. While working alongside him he was a man that gained my respect very quickly. The dedication he showed towards his profession was second to none. Having recently lost my dad I know the emotions that you and your family are experiencing. Be proud of what he did in his professional and personal life. His legacy with last forever. May God bless him and may he rest in eternal peace.

Dear Liz, Jay and Christine:

It is with heavy hearts that we send our deepest sympathy to you on the death of Jim.
He was a very accomplished man, and a true friend to both Phil and I. His reach throughout the Country, and the many lives he touched is a tribute to his character. How can I, personlly, forget the beginning of his career, working at the funeral home with Russell and Mark? He was such a bundle of energy and knew just how he wanted to bring his compassionate message to as many people as he could. May you be comforted by your memories, and may your faith help in the healing process. We are sure that Jay and Christine will continue to carry on his legacy.

Although Sumner Waring did not know me, I wanted to write to express appreciation for his vision. I am one of many social workers(and other professionals working in the area of grief), to attend several of the conferences put on by his, and then a coalition of funeral homes in the RI/Mass area.
These conferences were always a treat...from the wonderful speakers, to the food, to hearing about some worthy person who was being honored, to the fact that the conference and CEU's were all free. I'm sure there are many other areas in his life where his generosity came through, but I feel lucky to have benefitted because of him. I'm sure this special man will be much missed not only by family and friends, but by many whom he never even knew. Barbara Brown

Dear Liz, Jay & Kristin, & Christine, Please accept my sincere condolences on the loss of Jim. As you know, words cannot express the gratitude I feel for his unwaivering support to me and my family during the horrific time after the car accident when I was an apprentice in Kenmore Sq. His amazing treatment of my family when they traveled up for surgeries-supplying hotels, dinners, etc., his reassurances to them that I would always have a job with him no matter the outcome of the uncertain brain injuries, his loyalty and commitment to keep me employed, insured and paid during that time are unheard of in this day and age. Prior to the accident, I was wide-eyed and awed by his intelligence, professionalism and prestige. Not only am I a grateful for all that he did for me, I am thankful for having known him and learned from him. You are in my thoughts and prayers.

Jay,

I want to extend our deepest sympathy on your dad's passing. Although it is little consolation at this sad time, it must be gratifying to know that in his passing we celebrate the end of a very long and productive life.

May you find the strength to move forward with the confidence in knowing that his was a life well-lived. My thoughts and prayers are with you.

In Sympathy,

Eddie Lummus, General Manager

Jay, I had the distinct pleasure of meeting and talking to your Dad. He is a person who always had a smile on his face and a kind word for everyone. His accomplishments in funeral service and in his personal life are tremendous. He was the kind of funeral director who gave our business a good name. My thoughts are with you and your family at this difficult time.

Liz and Family,
When I joined the Waring team some 18 years ago, I thoight I knew everything there was to know about Funeral Service but quickly realized how wrong I was. Jim taught me from day 1 until the present. I will greatly miss him as a teacher, coworker & friend. My deepest sympathy to you all.

Jay and family - My sincere sympathy to your family during this difficult time.

Nearly fifty years ago, in the mid 1960's when Fall River and the Fall River Chamber of Commerce were both in serious trouble, Jim was one of the young lions that stepped forward. His leadership and effort helped to make a significant difference in the future of both. We were there during that time and we know that Jim will be sadly missed. Our memories are strong and many. Liz and his family are in our hearts and prayers. Dennis and Edie Orvis, Executive Vice President, Fall River Area Chamber of Commerce, 1969 to 1983.

Dear Liz, We were shocked to find Jim's obit in this morning's Prov. Journal. As you had suggested I was sitting tight 'til his treatments were over on Oct. 6th, and today was the day I was planning to call to see if now he was up to having us come to visit. All of us not only in the Westport community, but also (according to his obit) in the far wider community to which he reached out, will sorely miss his warmth, exuberance and love of life. We were priviledged to have known him and to have basked in the affection that was part and parcel of who he was.....a rare and wonderful soul. God Bless! We send you our love, Dick and Ellen Gower
