Susan (Susie) Jewel Cox, 69, died on March 14, 2023, after a two-year battle with cancer. She was born on Thanksgiving Day, November 26, 1953, in Midland, TX to Leigh and Lorene Cox.
Despite chronic health challenges, Susie was a spirited, happy child and had a wonderful life. She was brave, honest, a loyal friend, occasionally feisty, had a wonderful dry sense of humor and was a great secret keeper. She brightened the lives of everyone she encountered with her love and generous spirit.
In early adulthood, Susie moved to The Center for Pursuit (formerly Cullen Center) in Houston, TX where she lived for the next 47 years. She worked for Cullen Caners where she repaired and restored caned furniture. She was a talented artist and restored pieces for famous museums, businesses, designers, and individual clients. She took great pride in her work and loved working with Lonnie Hoyle and "The Caners". She was a member of the Cullen Dolphins Swim Team and swam in the Special Olympics. Susie began writing poetry as a child and continued to write all her life. She was a gifted poet and wrote three books and personally presented one to Barbara Bush. She loved to travel and went on many vacations and cruises with her parents and family. Susie loved board games and was a fierce Scrabble player, beating almost everyone who was brave enough to challenge her! She enjoyed crossword and word search puzzles, sudoku, and loved to read.
In the last years of her life, Susie battled cancer at Brookdale Willowbrook Place in Houston, TX while still making friends and charming everyone she met. Susie's family would like to thank all the caretakers that helped Susie through this journey.
Susie was preceded in death by her parents, Leigh Henderson Cox, Jr and Lorene Medford Cox. She is survived by her sisters, Catherine Cox Sullivant, Carolyn Cox O'Donnell (Joe), Virginia Cox Brown and her longtime roommate and honorary sister Lillian Perez. She also leaves behind six nieces and nephews and three great nieces and nephews. A private burial will be held at Walker's Chapel Cemetery in Reklaw, TX on Wednesday, March, 22, 2023 and a Celebration of Susie's Life will be held on April 12, 2023, 12:30 PM, at The Center for Pursuit.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations may be made in Susie's memory to The Center for Pursuit, 4400 Harrisburg Ave., Houston Texas, 77011. Memorial condolences to the family may be made at www.shmfh.com.

Susie was a volunteer at my workplace. She enjoyed her projects and was diligent. I loved her dry sense of humor and hearing her perspective. I send my condolences to Susie's family and friends.
