Susan Durst Obituary

Susan Nowicki Durst, a beloved mother, grandmother, sister, daughter, educator, and friend, passed away on June 18, 2024 at the age of 82 in Rockville, MD. She was born on February 8,1942, in Milford, CT, to John and Adele Nowicki.

Susan's journey through life was marked by a deep love for her family and a passion for education. Susan was the loving mother of three daughters, Kierstin Durst (Kevin Burdette), Jessica Jellen, and Vanessa Provencher, and son-in-law Dennis Provencher. She was also the very proud grandmother of six grandchildren, Dylan, Austin, Steven, Nicole, Chase, and Alex. Susan is preceded in death by her parents and her brother, Dr. John Nowicki. She is survived by her loving sister, Elizabeth Nowicki Currin.

She attended Laurelton Hall High School in Milford, CT, and later pursued her educational studies at Salve Regina College in Newport, RI.

Throughout her life, Susan had a zest for exploration and discovery. In the 1960s Susan lived briefly in Pomona, CA and Boston, MA. She lived in Denmark for a brief period in the early 1970s and traveled extensively throughout Europe, experiencing new cultures, and embracing the wonders of the world. Susan raised her daughters in the small but quaint and diverse community of Clarksburg, MD. In the 1990s, she moved to Romulus, NY, reveling in the beauty of lake living.

In 2006, Susan relocated to Cambridge, MD, where she delighted in the picturesque views of the Choptank River and embraced the charm of small-town life. She enjoyed boating with her family and cherished the memories created. Later, she settled in Leisure World, Silver Spring, MD, where she was surrounded by the warmth and love of her family.

Susan's dedication to education was evident throughout her life. She pursued a career as an educator, teaching for many years before taking time to raise her family. In the early 2000s, she returned to teaching while pursuing her education master's degree in Baltimore City. During her time in Cambridge, she found joy in substitute teaching, leaving a lasting impact on the lives of her students.

In addition to her passion for education, Susan was a talented entrepreneur and chef. She owned a successful catering company in Clarksburg and starred in and produced "Cooking in the Finger Lakes" during her time in NY. Her culinary skills brought joy to countless individuals and gatherings.

Susan was a devoted member of the Catholic Church and found fulfillment in volunteering wherever she lived. She fondly remembered seeing Pope Francis with her sister at the Shrine of the Immaculate Conception and attending Billy Graham's speaking engagement in Baltimore. Her compassionate spirit and willingness to lend a helping hand touched the lives of many. She bravely saved a drowning victim, administered the Heimlich maneuver to a choking victim, and donated a kidney to her dear brother.

Susan was also a dedicated fan of the Baltimore Ravens, finding joy in cheering for her team during football season.

She leaves behind a legacy of love, laughter, and cherished memories that will be forever treasured by those who knew and loved her.

A celebration of Susan's life will be held at Our Lady of Grace (15661 Norbeck Blvd, Silver Spring, MD) on Saturday, July 27 at 11am. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to St. Jude Children's Research Hospital.

Susan and I met when we were both newcomers to Cambridge, and we quickly became good friends. Susan moved to Cambridge on her own, and I could not help but admire her independent and adventurous spirit.

Susan loved life; she fully embraced its good times and accepted its challenges, always positive and always hopeful. She was warm, kind, and joyful with a beautiful smile. May she rest in peace.

My heartfelt condolences to her daughters and all of her family.
