Susan Horton Obituary

Fellow sojourners,

I, Susan E. Horton, age 81, have made my last journey around the sun. I am home with Jesus as of August 11, 2025, and am greeting my family and friends.

My footsteps have wandered the path from Bremerton, WA where I was born on October 25, 1943, daughter of Laurel and Barbara (Lemmer) Cowles. I've lived in many places, including WA, CA, AK, OK, NM, AZ, TX, MA, MD, and WI, and have happy memories from each of them.

I attended Salinas High School, Hartnell College, San Jose State University, Grand Canyon and Harpers Ferry Centers for National Park Service Training, and Stevens School of the Bible. I received my EMT certification from Carlsbad and Camp Lejeune.

Working in the National Park Service, I spent time in Big Bend, Carlsbad Caverns, Death Valley, and the Grand Canyon - I hope you get to see these places. I was a watercolor artist, and painted many of my favorite places. I found beauty in the magnificent and the mundane.

I was a teacher and also worked in healthcare for many years. I was always going to Bible studies, painting classes, or on walks. With my husband, I volunteered at Sullivan's Woods. I loved to travel with Road Scholars and my family.

I was active in the following organizations throughout my life: Carlsbad Spelunkers, AAAS, G.S.A Scouts, 4-H, Job's Daughters, OES, Thespians, SH Gymnastics Team. I was a dedicated member of the Silent Thunder Warriors prayer group.

I am survived by my sister Connie (Bob) Boronda; my children, Elizabeth Schroeder, Richard (Betsy) Horton, and Laurel (Douglas) Whiting; grandchildren, Rebecca Schroeder, Violet Horton, Rowan Horton, Harvey Whiting, and Alice Whiting; many nieces, nephews, in-laws, and cousins, and my faithful dog, Cricket. I am preceded by my parents, Laurel Cowles and Barbara (Harry) Wasmundt; my loving husband, Kim Horton; and my in-laws, Helen Horton and Richard (Joy) Horton.

A memorial service to celebrate my life will be held on Friday, August 29, 2025, at 11:00 am, at the Bethel Home Chapel at Bethel Home, 225 North Eagle Street, Oshkosh. Visitation will begin at 9:30am and continue until the start of the service.

A memorial is being established for my favorite charities.
