Susan Hubert, age 79, passed away on Monday, November 10, 2025, at Park Villa Nursing Home in Clyde, Kansas.
Susan was born on September 24, 1946, to Clayton and Agnes “Irene” (Hiltgen) Peterson in Concordia, Kansas. She was raised in Clyde, Kansas, where she enjoyed a childhood full of fun and adventure with her siblings, cousins, and many close friends.
After graduating from high school in Clyde, Susan married Leo “Bo” Hubert on October 3, 1964. Susan became a mother on September 10, 1965, when their son Mark was born, followed by their son John. She cherished being a stay-at-home mom and homemaker for many years. When John was three, he was diagnosed with leukemia. Susan spent the next six years faithfully by his side during long visits to KU Medical Center in Kansas City, Missouri. She was with him through it all, including his passing on April 24, 1977, at their home in Concordia. His death was a tremendous loss, but Susan always kept him close in her heart and looked forward to seeing him again one day.
Susan and Bo later welcomed two more children, Luke and Anne, who made their family complete. Once her children were all in school, Susan began working outside the home. She started as a school cook, then became a paraprofessional at the LCNCK Preschool, later working as a para at Concordia High School and at Angel Squares. She eventually pursued college courses at Beloit Vo-Tech and Cloud County Community College, studying nursing. Although she decided nursing wasn’t her calling, she went on to work as a dental assistant for Dr. Greg Hattan, where she remained for many years and enjoyed getting to know all the patients who came through the office. As time went on, Susan transitioned to working at Cunningham Cable and later finished her career as a receptionist at Mount Joseph Nursing Home.
Susan was a member of the VFW Women’s Auxiliary and the American Legion. She was also a devoted member of Our Lady of Perpetual Help Catholic Church, where she enjoyed serving funeral dinners, singing in the choir, teaching CCD classes over the years, and serving on the Parish Council. After she and Bo moved to Belleville, Kansas, in 2019, they joined St. Edward’s Catholic Church, where she continued to stay active in parish life and attended daily Mass and morning coffee gatherings.
Coffee time was one of Susan’s favorite pastimes—she loved catching up with friends and sharing stories. For years, she and her dear friends Ruth Ann Matthes, Madeline Grosse, and Cathy Lowers met almost daily at one another’s homes, Hardee’s, the Thunderbird, or Kristy’s to enjoy coffee, discuss their latest romance novels, and chat about local happenings. Bo loved and adored Susan with all his heart, but he often joked about how a quick trip to Walmart or the grocery store could take over an hour—because Susan never missed a chance to stop and talk with friends along the way. Even in her last months at Park Villa Nursing Home in Clyde, she brought laughter, warmth, and joy to residents and staff alike with her stories and humor.
Susan is survived by her children: Mark (Cathy) Hubert of Ballwin, Missouri; Luke (Michelle) Hubert of Belleville, Kansas; and Anne (Jared) Collette of Belleville, Kansas. She is also survived by her six grandchildren—Blaine (fiancée Deanna) and Clayton (Teresa) Hubert of Ballwin, Missouri; Andrew (fiancée Kassie) and Emma Hubert of Belleville, Kansas; and Matthew and Leo Collette of Belleville, Kansas—as well as her great-granddaughter, Adelaide Hubert. She is also survived by her brothers, Pat Peterson of Clyde, Kansas, and Father Michael Peterson of Wamego, Kansas; her sister, Colleen Plowman of Clyde, Kansas; and many extended family members and friends.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Leo “Bo” Hubert; her parents, Clayton and Irene Peterson; and her beloved son, John.
